GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. - Watching, waiting and wondering.?
That's what a lot of people in one local community are doing these days. ?It all involves an uncertain future about a major piece of property.?
?
The owner and county leaders are trying attract new business to the area and hope they'll succeed.?
?
While there's been some activity at the site there isn't any new business, yet. ?The property in question sits along Route 45 leading into Mayfield. ?It's the old Continental General Tire Plan that shut down and was later purchased by Ken-Tex Development.?
?
"The owners do have a few prospects, we have a few prospects for the property," Graves County Growth Alliance Executive Director Don Dorris said.?
?
"This is a great property. It's a diamond in the rough, it's just a matter of time of when someone's going to jump on this opportunity," Dorris added.?
?
However, time keeps passing without much change, other than crews demolishing sections of the old factory.?
?
Linda Ramage has been able to see the site from her front yard for 43 years.?
?
"It does sadden me that (General Tire) is not there anymore," Ramage said. ?"You know, it's just hard. ?It's hard for people today and we need jobs."?
?
She's not alone when saying she'd like to see this area become busy with new business.?
?
"You know, so many people are unemployed. ?My son, right now, has been unemployed from time to time and he went down to work there right out of high school," Ramage added.?
?
Dorris hopes the stats attract companies: 300 acres, 400 square feet of warehouse, three rail spurs and several sections for development.?
?
"There's about 1,600,000 square feet of reinforced concrete slab that can be used for staging or commodity exchange," Dorris said.?
?
Ramage added, "I just hope and pray that something good will come, if not there somewhere else."?
?
Brad Youngblood with Youngblood Excavating is involved with the operation. ?He told Local 6 there are roughly four prospective businesses interested and two seem very serious.?
