Inspired Giving Featured Cause: HealthCorps

On May 1, President Barack Obama issued a Presidential Proclamation to recognize National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Today, an estimated 16 to 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese.? In the wake of an American childhood obesity epidemic, distinguishing paths to prevention is not only appropriate, but critical.

In 2003, world-renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife Lisa executed the blueprint for HealthCorps, an in-school program enabling more communities to empower their youth as educated consumers and health activists. HealthCorps is dedicated to the fight against childhood obesity and the discovery of what Americans are truly hungry for.

HealthCorps? top three priorities are educating students, Creating a Fit Town, and advocacy. As a result, the program is transforming the educational model one school at a time. The HealthCorps network now spans 53 schools in 13 states. In a 2009 study, the program was evaluated and the results found significant benefits, including over a third of participants more likely to report that they are more physically active.

It has been said that obesity is the American plague of the 21^st century. Our awareness of childhood obesity and methods of prevention should begin this month, but the example we set must persist, as overweight children are most at risk to become obese adults.
