Bethesda, MD The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) announces the opening of registration for the Science Research Conference (SRC): Post-transcriptional Control of Gene Expression: Mechanisms of mRNA Decay.

This conference will take place June 24-29, 2012 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The goal of the conference is to improve our current understanding of the fundamental mechanisms by which post-transcriptional control of RNA stability and translation regulates gene expression in normal and disease states. The program will consist of sessions that will broadly address cutting-edge issues including 5' and 3' end control of mRNA decay, subcellular localization of mRNA translation and decay, and RNA-binding proteins and mRNA fate. Small poster sessions will also enable all participants to contribute to, and learn about, these topics. There is also free time in the program for informal discussions among established and junior principal investigators, post-doctoral trainees and graduate students from the U.S. and abroad. This meeting will bring together sets of researchers who, despite having converging interests, have infrequent opportunities to meet as a group. A particular attraction is to bring together researchers focused on prokaryotic and eukaryotic features of post-transcriptional control to exchange information and stimulate new ideas. The resulting discussions and cross-fertilization will help define critical areas to propel this field forward.

###

Since 1982, FASEB SRC has offered a continuing series of inter-disciplinary exchanges that are recognized as a valuable complement to the highly successful society meetings. Divided into small groups, scientists from around the world meet intimately and without distractions to explore new approaches to those research areas undergoing rapid scientific changes.

In recent years, the SRC series has expanded into non-summer months. To better enhance the SRC series and allow for future expansion of conferences, FASEB's Office of Scientific Meetings and Conferences recently changed the SRC name from Summer Research Conferences to Science Research Conferences.

FASEB SRC has announced a total of 36 SRCs in 2012, spanning from June through October. To register for an SRC, view preliminary programs, or find a listing of all our 2012 SRCs, please visit http://www.faseb.org/SRC.

Additionally, in efforts to continue expanding the SRC series, potential organizers are encouraged to contact SRC staff at SRC@faseb.org. Proposal guidelines can be found by clicking "Submit a Proposal" on our website at http://www.faseb.org/SRC.

FASEB is composed of 26 societies with more than 100,000 members, making it the largest coalition of biomedical research associations in the United States. Celebrating 100 Years of Advancing the Life Sciences in 2012, FASEB is rededicating its efforts to advance health and well-being by promoting progress and education in biological and biomedical sciences through service to our member societies and collaborative advocacy.

Mike Green: Daymond John: Investing in America

"The new rules we passed restore what should be any financial system's core purpose: getting funding to entrepreneurs with the best ideas. ... After all, innovation is what America has always been about."
President Barack Obama State of the Union Address Jan. 24, 2012

* * *

Just before President Obama spoke to Congress and the nation in his State of the Union address, I sat down with Daymond John, founder of FUBU and one of the stars of the ABC reality show, "Shark Tank," to talk about entrepreneurship, angel investing, job growth, education and... transforming Silicon Valley.

Q: Do you consider yourself an angel?

A: Yes, I do. I'm not friends and family and I'm not part of a venture fund.

Q: Steve Blank, professor of entrepreneurship at Stanford University, says without a culture of risk capital in Silicon Valley, the global innovation hub it has become would instead be little more than a place with a bunch of smart engineers working out of their garages. That speaks volumes about the value of risk capital investment in developing an innovation ecosystem. You are part of that ecosystem. How important do you think it is for job growth and wealth creation?

A: I think it is by far the most important aspect of our ecosystem to have risk-taking investors and (access to) capital. The reason people come to us is because guys like us do not have the restrictions and the same amount of requests that the banks and the financial institutions have.

We do risk investments and 10 percent of our capital ends up creating a return, and the return is greater than all the risks taken. But there's a lot of capital put into the system that traditionally would never be deployed to these startup companies and we never get a return on it.

These companies and individuals often don't have to risk a lot of their personal finances. And once we deploy the capital and things do not go well, they are still in a position to move forward and create different and new entities after learning what has happened in the past. So, for various reasons, I think it's extremely valuable.

Q: Michael Arrington's now infamous remark to CNN's Soledad O'Brien, that he didn't know a single black CEO or entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, has raised the question of the underrepresentation of black founders leading tech startups. But it also raises the question regarding the lack of black angel investors in the space. What can be done to attract the participation of high net worth African Americans to get involved in angel investing and immediately develop minority angel groups as a method of spurring job growth and wealth creation?

2012-01-26-DaymondJohn.jpg
Daymond John
Founder, FUBU; Star of "Shark Tank" (ABC)

A: I don't know the landscape of how many African American angels are out there. When I speak at a lot of the conferences, I think it's maybe a representation of the demographics of the United States. I do see about 10 percent African American angel investors and/or venture capitalists.

But I do agree there's a lack of CEOs and people of color in Silicon Valley.

I'm the kind of person that when I saw a lack of African Americans in the apparel business, that was something I set out to do and I lead by example.

My No. 1 agenda over the next five years is to change Silicon Valley -- the face of it -- by bringing the same mentality I had with FUBU, which is bringing popular culture -- all my artists, myself, my capital and my friends -- to Silicon Valley.

If you look at the last show (ABC's "Shark Tank" episode aired Jan. 20, 2012), Mark Cuban and I back a CEO of a tech company, "EZ VIP" (Alashe Nelson); that's my first foray into that territory. I don't necessarily know from any other standpoint how to make things happen besides attacking it myself.

Q: How can a culture of high-growth entrepreneurship and an urban innovation ecosystem be cultivated in Urban America?

A: I think it's an education process. I think African Americans are resilient and hustlers by nature. I think they need to understand that you can take that hustle to the boardroom, but it has to be an education process. Right now they don't understand how, but the (access to) the money is out there. Opportunities are there. I'm working with Startup America, and I work with the NFTE program as well as Babson University. So I work with a lot of programs that are trying to give African Americans information these opportunities exist.

Q: What do you think about Rick Santorum's assessment that bringing back the waning manufacturing industry is the best option for black Americans to earn income?

A: I can't say it's the best option. I think it's a needed option; and I don't think it's solely for African Americans. I think that is what we need as a country. I think the reason he's saying that is African Americans know how to be blue collar workers. Because the hurdles... and access to education may not be readily available, or they may not feel that is the way they want to go. Blue collar manufacturing can be something that can be easy to get into as you have seen historically in Detroit.

But, do I think manufacturing should be brought back to America as a whole? I think we should not only rely on the tech-based and new startups. Prices overseas on goods and labor has risen. I think as Americans, especially African Americans, we make the best products... and with the highest standard of quality. And I think we need to bring manufacturing here in general.

Q: As an investor in startups and early stage companies, what do you look for in the founders, the team and the presentation?

A: In the founders I look for a person I feel is trustworthy, driven and smart. I invest in the person first, because in the event the business fails the person and I can move forward and create another business.

In the business itself and/or the product, I love to look at things that have some kind of patent or proprietary aspect to it. I like to look at things that have been developed and re-developed over the course of time so I know the bugs are worked out of it. And in the business itself, I like to look at sales, by far. I want to see that there is a vetted track record of sales to show the price point has worked. And from a delivery and distribution standpoint, that it has worked and they have targeted a certain demographic and/or customer. I like to look at the scalability, that there is scale and upswing, and a place to make a profit, and great margins that will support the business.

Q: How important is STEM education? (science, technology, engineering and math)

A: We are in a day and age of technology, science and coding and things of that nature. So, to understand the basics of it is very important. I know that even now, programmers and things of that nature we're outsourcing to China and India.

An average (American) kid who knows simple programming, science and math can get a job as a programmer easily. Those are the jobs that are available. I think whatever industry you're in, you're going to have to deal with that aspect of the business... whether you're making clothes or a new technology. So, I think by far it's one of the most important things we can do.

Q: What is the most important lesson you've learned as a star on ABC's "Shark Tank?"

A: I learned that, by far, it's the person pitching and the person behind the company. The person as a personal brand is more important than anything else. I've seen great products, and the person's sales were not reliable or believable or trustworthy or driven enoug ... and it died. And I've seen products that were things I would look over; and the person, no matter whether I invested in them or not, was resilient enough to get the job done and grow the product and/or the business.

Q: Tell me about an investment that didn't work out the way you thought it would, but the person in whom you invested made it worthwhile.

A: Companies sometimes take three to five years to show any kind of profit. But TC Pets, led by a young lady named Lisa Lloyd that I invested in, is very similar to the newer version of pillow pets. And it came out at a time that I think was a key time. She's been working and trying to get the product to flourish and to grow. And no matter what, over the last three years -- she has tried different routes, whether it be direct television or international distribution in kids stores, in plush toys, in furniture stores... I think that TC Pets still has viability. I think that it's something that will grow.

But by far Lisa is... I think she's a genius. I think she's a very driven woman, a woman with three kids who is an inventor. She knows how to license products, and Lisa and I have done other businesses. I value her now more than just a partner. I value her as a friend. That becomes way more valuable than the company.

Q: What one question would you ask of America or any of its leaders?

A: Where are the tax incentives for manufacturers and producers to develop factories and jobs here instead of having to go overseas?

If a garment costs me $50 to make here why would I be able to get it overseas for $40? I'd rather make it here, develop factories and jobs and deal with insurance and medical and everything else I have to do, employment and everything else. I'd rather do that here if there's a tax incentive for me to do it. If not, I can just send my money overseas and get a product cheaper without any of the hassle.

But, if you give incentives to manufacturers and people who create jobs, they will work with regards to building our communities and jobs and keep the money within our country. So, where are the incentives? I don't want to give my money overseas.

* * *

"Most new jobs are created in startups and small businesses. So let's pass an agenda that helps them succeed. Expand tax relief to small businesses that are raising wages and creating good jobs. Both parties agree on these ideas. So put them in a bill, and get it on my desk this year."
President Barack Obama, State of the Union Address, Jan. 24, 2012

Starbucks to open 50 stores in India this year

Starbucks aims to open 50 outlets in India by year's end, through a 50-50 joint venture with Tata Global Beverages, the companies said Monday.

Tata Starbucks Ltd., as their venture is known, hopes to capitalize on the rising aspirations ? and fattening wallets ? of many Indians, who are eager to partake of the global latte life.

"What we are seeing is an evolution in lifestyles," said R.K. Krishnakumar, vice chairman of Tata Global Beverages. "In some ways the distinctions between the developed world and the developing world are blurring."

He said the partners would initially invest 4 billion rupees ($80 million), with the first outlet to open in Mumbai or New Delhi by September.

Long known as a nation of tea drinkers ? despite a rich tradition of coffee in the south ? India has embraced coffee house culture with a vengeance.

Last year, India had 1,600 cafes, up from just 700 in 2007, according to Technopak Advisors, which expects India's $170 million cafe market to grow 30 percent a year, adding up to 2,700 more outlets over the next five years.

"We're going to move as fast as possible in opening as many stores as we can so long as we are successful and so long as we are embraced by the Indian consumers," said John Culver, president of Starbucks China and Asia Pacific.

Unusually, the stores will be cobranded "Starbucks Coffee: A Tata Alliance."

The companies will also develop a tea for the Indian market under the Tata Tazo brand.

Last January, Starbucks signed an agreement with Tata Coffee, a unit of Tata Global Beverages, to source and roast coffee beans in India.

The alliance with Tata could help ease one of the main burdens for retailers in India: the high cost of real estate.

Krishnakumar said the joint venture would open outlets at properties owned by group companies, for example at the Taj chain of luxury hotels.

Culver said the company would also look at opening outlets in shopping malls, office parks, universities, airports and train stations.

The alliance will also help Tata Global Beverages expand its international footprint. All coffee beans for the cafes in India will be sourced from Tata Coffee, which also hopes to ramp up exports to regional Starbucks outlets, Krishnakumar said. He said other Tata Beverage brands, like Himalayan water, should also find their way into Starbucks outlets globally.

Culver said Starbucks did not consider trying to go it alone in India, despite the government's recent decision to allow foreign companies to operate single-brand retail outlets without a local partner. A storm of populist fury forced New Delhi to pull back a parallel proposal that would have allowed multi-brand retailers, like Wal-Mart, to open retail outlets with local partners.

"We never considered 51 percent," Culver said. "When we looked at the opportunity to enter India, understanding the complexities of the market and the uniqueness that is India, we wanted to find a local business partner."

Starbucks currently operates over 17,000 stores in 57 countries.

Its India venture will face competition from existing players like Cafe Coffee Day, which dominates the market.

Technopak founder Arvind Singhal said India's flourishing cafe culture has less to do with coffee than a social need for clean, safe gathering places for young and old alike, who often live in cramped quarters.

"India doesn't have too many places for people of any age to just go out," he said. "It's not about a coffee culture. It's a gathering place where people can sit and meet."

He added that Starbucks' entry, however much delayed, is likely to fan competition and speed the proliferation of coffee shops. It could also help boost flagging investor confidence in India. "It's almost like an endorsement that India's still a good story," he said.

Supplemental Disability Insurance

Supplemental disability insurance could be ideal to invest in, especially when you need a longer period of leave from your job such as during pregnancy, injury or sickness. As the name suggests, it is supplementary to short-term disability plan. It is ideal when you have bigger responsibilities on your shoulders while away from your work. Unlike short-term disability policies, supplementary excludes you being under doctor?s survey or continuous care. Further, your benefits can start post-waiting period depending on what you choose, which could be either from one week to 6 months.

?

Eligibility:

?

Eligibility rests on employment type, as different employment types demand different criterions. Most importantly, you need having a full time job for meeting the eligibility criteria of the supplementary disability. In fact, you may start with analyzing the eligibility rules before you enroll with supplemental disability insurance. What is the point in looking up the plan details and in the end finding that you are not eligible for the plan? Thus, it is recommended to first look at best disability insurance, reading about its eligibility criteria, as then becomes increasingly clear whether the plan is suitable for you or not. In case, the plan demands any specific demands, which you are not eligible to, then you may simply move to another that suits you the best with your eligibilities and needs.

?

Enrollment:

?

It is ideal to enroll in best disability insurance plans, when you foresee future dependence on them. That is, if you have a prior information about high requirement of cash before the event, then you may simply refer to enrolling yourself for the supplementary plans, as they can benefit you more specifically during the time you need them the most.

?

It is ideal to invest in best disability insurance plans within the coverage periods of one month from your initial eligibility. However, in case you miss out this, that is if you postponed the supplementary needs after the eligibility has passed, then you may have to submit a health statement covering information about your health and condition. Further, it is easy to enroll as well as cancel supplementary disability any time you wish. This flexibility can be an added advantage, but you may also consider the fact, that disabilities wait for none. Hence, instead of changing dates back and forth, you can save more benefits, if you plan your ways through it

?

Health Statement:

?

In case you give a miss to enroll within stipulated period of 31 days, then you require submitting additional documents such as health statements. A health statement plays a pivotal role for your insurance firm to derive your past medical information. It helps them to gauge the risks involved in lending you disability insurance coverage. Further, it also helps them declare your eligibility. In case, they found you as high-risk client, then there are chances that you may end up paying higher premiums. However, there is also a chance, that they may reject your enrollment if found ineligible as per the set of rules.

?

Coverage:

?

Supplemental disability insurance benefits you weekly during disability periods with cash benefits as high as 70% of your gross earnings. Further, the amount of benefit you fetch could vary depending on plan and your salary as well. Further, you can fetch supplementary benefits along with short-term disability benefits for the first six months. However, if you want to benefit supplementary along with short-term disability, then you need to have a continuous care or doctor?s supervision. In addition, if your disability lasts longer than 12 months consecutively, then it is termed as permanent disability and one may lose the benefits of short-term disabilities if long-term plan is not clubbed with it

?

Cost:

?

Disability insurance coverage cost is one of the most important criteria, which makes people opt for one policy over another. Indeed, cost plays a crucial role, as it is hardly wise to invest in plans having wide flexibilities but at a high cost. Thus, cost is equivalently important to look before you decide on investing into any plan.

?

Salary Hike:

?

In case your salary increases, then it may not extend to your supplementary disability or disability insurance coverage, unless first day of the year comes. Thus, you can expect a hike only after new-year calendar sets in. Further the above holds true, in case you switch from full time to part time without changing the rate of pay. That is, you cannot expect a change of rate in supplementary disability benefits, even if you downgrade your fulltime job to part time when per hour income rate remains unchanged.

'Project Nim' wins Directors Guild doc award (omg!)

Director Michel Hazanavicius, right, and Berenice Bejo arrive at the 64th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. (AP Photo/Dan Steinberg)

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? James Marsh won the documentary prize Saturday at the Directors Guild of America Awards for "Project Nim," his chronicle of the triumphs and trials of a chimpanzee that was raised like a human child.

It was the latest major Hollywood prize for Marsh, who earned the documentary Academy Award for 2008's "Man on Wire." Among those Marsh beat out for the guild award was Martin Scorsese, who had been up for the documentary honor for "George Harrison: Living in the Material World" and also was nominated for the evening's highest honor, for feature-film directing.

The film favorites were guild awards regular Scorsese for his Paris adventure "Hugo" and first-time nominee Michel Hazanavicius for his silent movie "The Artist."

Also in the running were Woody Allen for his romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris"; David Fincher for his thriller "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"; and Alexander Payne for his family drama "The Descendants."

At the start of the ceremony, Guild President Taylor Hackford led the crowd in a toast to one of his predecessors, Gil Cates, the veteran producer of the Academy Awards broadcast who died last year.

Robert B. Weide won the comedy directing award for an episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Other early television winners at the guild ceremony were:

? Reality programming: Neil P. DeGroot, "The Biggest Loser."

? Musical variety: Glenn Weiss, "The 65th Annual Tony Awards."

? Daytime serials: William Ludel, "General Hospital."

? Children's programs: Amy Schatz, "A Child's Garden of Poetry."

? Commercials: Noam Murro.

The Directors Guild Awards are one of Hollywood's most accurate forecasts for who will win at the industry's top honors, the Oscars, which will be handed out Feb. 26. Only six times in the 63-year history of the guild awards has the winner failed to take home the Oscar for best director, and more often than not, the film winning the best director Oscar is voted best picture.

Fincher had been the favorite going into the Directors Guild ceremony last year for "The Social Network," but Tom Hooper came away the winner for "The King's Speech." Hooper went on to win the Oscar, too, and his film also earned best picture.

This time, Fincher's the odd man out at the Directors Guild show. The other four guild nominees made the best-director cut at Tuesday's Oscar nominations, but Fincher missed out. The fifth Oscar slot went to Terrence Malick for the family chronicle "The Tree of Life."

French filmmaker Hazanavicius, whose credits include the spy spoofs "OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies" and "OSS 117: Lost in Rio," had been a virtual unknown in Hollywood until "The Artist," his black-and-white throwback to early cinema that has been a favorite at earlier film honors.

"The Artist" won the Golden Globe for best musical or comedy and is considered a best-picture front-runner for the Oscars.

But Scorsese won the Globe for directing over Hazanavicius.

Unlike Hazanavicius, the other nominees all have competed for Directors Guild honors before. Scorsese earned his ninth and 10th guild nominations this season for "Hugo" and his George Harrison documentary.

Scorsese is a past feature-film winner for 2006's "The Departed," as well as a TV drama winner a year ago for an episode of "Boardwalk Empire." The family film "Hugo" was a departure for Scorsese, known for dark crime tales, and the movie also was his first shot in 3-D.

Allen has been nominated five times and won for 1977's "Annie Hall." He had not been nominated since his 1989 "Crimes and Misdemeanors" but has been on a critical and commercial resurgence for "Midnight in Paris," his biggest hit in decades.

This was the third nomination for Fincher. Payne was nominated one time previously, for 2004's "Sideways."

(AP) ? Cuba convicted six people of cutting down African mahogany trees in the National Botanical Gardens and sentenced them to eight and 10 years in prison, the Communist Party newspaper Granma said Friday.

The men felled nine trees on two occasions in December and harvested a total of $122 worth of wood, according to the court sentencing printed alongside the article. Mahogany sells for considerably more than that elsewhere, listing for $10 to $15 per board-foot on some U.S. websites.

Angela Leiva, director of the reserve, told Granma that the 30- to 40-year-old trees were important to the ecology of the gardens and their loss cannot be repaired in the short or medium term.

Inaugurated by Fidel Castro in 1989 and located just south of the capital, the 1,500-acre (600-hectare) Botanical Gardens fell on hard times after Cuba's 1990s economic crisis precipitated by the collapse of the Soviet Union, the island's largest trade partner and benefactor.

The reserve's facilities fell into disrepair, vigilance became lax and the entire 7-mile (11.5-kilometer) perimeter fence was scavenged amid "social indiscipline," Granma said.

The government has been waging a campaign against lawbreaking and "social indiscipline," with official newspapers such as Granma carrying reminders of stiff penalties for everything from the unauthorized slaughter of cattle to illegally building home expansions onto sidewalks.

Authorities began to notice trees sporadically disappearing from the reserve in 2008, according to Granma's full-page article. The thefts increased over the next two years and reserve officials complained to authorities.

"Regrettably, misunderstanding prevailed in the face of these claims and no preventative measure or action was taken to avoid a repeat of such events," the story said.

The tough sentences announced Friday send a stern warning that illegal cutting in the reserve will no longer go unpunished.

The court said it took into account aggravating factors, such as conspiracy by three or more people and the commission of a crime at night or in an unpopulated area, in condemning two men to a decade behind bars and the rest to eight years.

It said the six acted with others who have not been identified to transport, process and sell the lumber.

Granma said a new fence made of wood and bars is being constructed around the Botanical Gardens, and authorities are adding vehicles and communications equipment to bolster the night guard. A plan to erect five observation towers has also been approved.

Cuba has scarce supplies of wood for uses from carpentry to home construction, and illegal scavenging for materials to sell on the black market is common.

The economy has recovered somewhat since the 1990s but is still struggling. Authorities regularly blame shortages on the United States' nearly 50-year-old trade and travel embargo against the island.

'Archer': The new season is good for fans and newbies alike

'Archer' creator Adam Reed and the cast seem to have gotten more comfortable with the rhythm and strengths of the show they've created.

After a short mini-season arc in the fall (a la Lost), FX?s Archer is now back for its official full third season, kicking things off with a premiere that featured a guest appearance by leading man icon (and Sterling Archer?s longtime man-crush), Burt Reynolds.

Skip to next paragraph Screen Rant

Screen Rant had a humble start back in 2003 as a place to rant about some of the dumber stuff related to the movie industry. Since then, the site has grown to cover more and more TV and movie news (and not just the dumb stuff) along with sometimes controversial movie reviews. The goal at Screen Rant is to cover stories and review movies from a middle ground/average person perspective.

Recent posts

The episode (titled ?The Man from Jupiter?) was already distinguished by Reynolds? presence ? but it also proved that?Archer is truly hitting is comedic stride in season 3.

Things started in the usual Archer fashion: with our master spy (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) by the bar, courting a few young ladies. The twist comes when Archer bumps into one of the other patrons of the bar ? who just so happens to be Burt ?Gator? Reynolds. Then comes another twist: Burt isn?t just at the bar by chance ? he?s there to meet Archer?s mother Malory (Jessica Walters) for their?date. Cue Archer fainting.

Torn between the love of his man-crush and nausea at the thought of anyone ?dating? his mother, Archer does just what his ISIS co-workers figure he will: he kidnaps Burt and leaves Malory a forged breakup letter. Of course, while caught up in his personal drama, Archer forgets entirely about the professional perils he?s facing ? namely the Cuban hit squad on his tail, seeking vengeance for the comrades that Archer killed way back in the season 1 episode, ?Honeypot?. ?Lana (Aisha Tyler) and the other ISIS agents try to watch Archer?s back, but?instead land themselves in the hit squad?s crosshairs, leaving it to Archer and Burt to mount a rescue.

The strength of Archer has always been in its witty and profane character banter. While consistently funny, sometimes the amount of time spent on dialogue and hit-or-miss improv was a little much. Season 2 got better about including action with all the word play, but ?The Man From Jupiter? takes things a step further by keeping the banter-heavy jokes firing fast and hitting often, the action ongoing (instead of tacked on to the end) ? and perhaps best of all, reigning in some of Archer?s douchebag personality, so that it doesn?t cross the line from humorous to annoying. Who knew that Burt Reynolds would be such a wise and reasonable foil for Sterling Archer?

Indeed, it seems that with each season series creator/voice contributor Adam Reed and his cast just get more and more comfortable with the rhythm and strengths of the unique show they?ve created. There are now multiple levels to enjoy the show on, be it the low-brow hilarity of the raunchy one-liners and visual gags; the sharper-witted banter and word play humor for the more attentive viewers to enjoy; or the multiple in-jokes and self-references that make the character situations and conversations even more rich and entertaining for longtime fans of the show.?No matter which category you fit into, Archer is delivering the goods at the moment.

With a few juicy plot threads laid out and Reynolds (seemingly) on hand for at least a few episodes, it seems like Archer?is only going to get better, and funnier, as season 3 progresses.

Verizon ZTE V66 tablet gets pic outed by the Bluetooth SIG

ZTE V66

Behold, the ZTE V66 Android tablet, apparently destined for Verizon at some point. The tablet as already been submitted to the U.S. FCC, and now a thumbnail picture (we've blown it up a tad here) has been listed on the Bluetooth Special Interest Group's site.

What we're looking at in the V66 is a 7-inch tablet with some pretty rounded corners, Android 3.2 Honeycomb and 4G LTE data, along with the usual CDMA, Bluetooth, Wifi, and all that jazz.

We can also see a custom lock screen here, for what it's worth. And we're trying not to read too much into the "Sunday, February 2X" date -- it could mean anything or nothing, or it could be smack in the middle of Mobile World Congress. You don't typically see U.S. announcements come out of MWC, but then again we don't ZTE devices in the states yet to base that one, and there's no reason why Verizon couldn't be part of a larger launch.

Anyhoo, we'll be at Mobile World Congress if and when the V66 -- and we don't expect that to be the name Verizon ultimately bestows on it -- is announced stay tuned.

Dan Walters: California Legislature once again earns scorn

Last Tuesday, the Public Policy Institute of California issued a new poll that found, among other things, just 17 percent of the state's voters like the Legislature's performance.

Simultaneously, the Legislature's top leaders provided another reason for Californians to harbor such scorn.

Assembly Speaker John P?rez and Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg announced that they would spend untold amounts of taxpayers' money on high-priced lawyers to sue state Controller John Chiang over his decision to withhold legislators' paychecks last year after they failed to enact a balanced budget.

Call The Bee's Dan Walters, (916) 321-1195. Back columns, www.sacbee.com/ walters. Follow him on Twitter @WaltersBee.

Chiang was merely enforcing a new provision of the state constitution that voters enacted in 2010 ? a change of budget law that the Democratic legislative leaders themselves had championed, along with their allies in public employee unions.

Proposition 25's chief purpose was to eliminate the two-thirds legislative vote requirement on budgets, thereby allowing Democrats to pass budgets without Republicans. Concerned that voters would see that as a naked power grab, the measure's sponsors included a sweetener: legislators' pay would be docked if they didn't balance the budget by June 15.

It was a campaign gimmick, and the measure's sponsors never thought that it would actually be applied. After all, they assumed, the Legislature could pass some kind of budget by June 15 and pronounce it balanced to technically comply.

That's exactly what the Legislature did, but Gov. Jerry Brown then vetoed the plan, declaring it unbalanced, and Chiang invoked Proposition 25 to cut off legislators' pay.

The howling from the Capitol's occupants was tellingly self-serving. How dare Chiang take the measure seriously, they complained; isn't he a loyal Democrat?

The cutoff lasted only a couple of weeks because Brown miraculously declared that the state would get an extra $4 billion in revenue. Legislators quickly revised the budget to include the miracle money, declaring it to be balanced, and Chiang just as quickly restored their pay.

Everyone knew that the $4 billion was unlikely to appear, and some months later, Brown revealed that just half of it was likely to show up, triggering some automatic spending cuts.

But the shortfall, coupled with higher-than-budgeted spending, means the fiscal year will probably end on June 30 with the state a couple of billion dollars in the red.

In other words, the budget was never balanced, and legislators should humbly apologize for taking their pay. Instead, their leaders are suing to make sure the pay cutoff never happens again, wrapping themselves in the dubious assertion that Chiang violated separation of powers.

It's the sort of self-dealing arrogance that richly earns voters' contempt.

95% Elite Squad: The Enemy Within

"They fatten up the pig, now we gonna roast it."After a prison riot, Captain Nascimiento, now a high ranking security officer in Rio de Janeiro, is swept into a bloody political dispute that involves government officials and paramilitary groups. REVIEWElite Squad 2 works because it grows from the first one. The first movie introduced BOPE to the world and had to spend time explaining its methods, philosophy, code of honour and recruitment process. The sequel doesn't suffer from the burden of exposition, and instead of rehashing the plot of the first - the bane of most sequels - it lets the characters' personalities lead the story.Brazilian cinema has been very good since City of God exploded in the world like a hand grenade. Because of it Brazilian cinema has become synonymous with crime movies, even if that's a gross generalization. A subgenre of crime movies defined by graphic violence, social criticism and inventive camera work has prospered in its wake: My Name Ain't Johnny, The Man Who Copied, City of Men, Bus 174, and the Elite Squad movies. At the heart of this Renaissance is the movie's screenwriter, Br?ulio Mantovani. For better or for worse all these movies take inspiration from the style he established in City of God. Directors and actors come and go, but everyone still copies the dark humour, the political irreverence, the non-linear narratives, and the clever voice-over that earned Mantovani an Oscar nomination almost a decade ago.Editor Daniel Rezende, who also worked in City of God, puts the movie together with the force of a tornado. Complementing director of photography Lula Carvalho's documentary-like style, the fast editing and the dizzying camera work go as far as cinema outside of 3D can go in immersing the viewer in the middle of the action.

Haley Smith Aims for a Fourth Job on American Idol

She's already a House cleaner, a busser and a meat packer.

But Haley Smith, an 18-year old who - by her own admission - lives "in the middle of nowhere" in Colorado, hopes to add a fourth job to her resume: American Idol champion!

The nature lover auditioned on last night's Aspen-based episode and blew the judges away with a cover of "Tell Me Something Good." Randy and Jennifer both loved her retro vibe, comparing her to artists from the 1960s and 1970s, while Steven said it was an "honor" to her Haley sing.

That's high praise. See for yourself if it was deserved:

Gingrich unloads on Romney, ads, in Florida speech (AP)

MOUNT DORA, Fla. ? Newt Gingrich on Thursday dramatically ramped up his attacks on Mitt Romney, saying the former Massachusetts governor is guilty of lies, desperation and hypocrisy that should make "every American angry."

Gingrich, the former House speaker, said he was infuriated by a barrage of attack ads that are blistering him on Florida TV stations ahead of Tuesday's GOP presidential primary. Most are funded by an outside organization backing Romney, but some are from Romney's own campaign. Unable to match Romney's money machine, Gingrich implored Florida Republicans to punish his chief rival for what Gingrich called callously dishonest ads.

"This is the desperate last stand of the old order," Gingrich told an outdoor crowd of more than 1,000 northwest of Orlando. "This is the kind of gall they have to think we're so stupid and we're so timid."

The nature and volume of the attack ads are similar to those that badly damaged Gingrich in Iowa a month ago.

"I think all the weight of his negative advertising and all the weight of his dishonesty has hurt us some," Gingrich said. But "I am not going to allow the moneyed interests that are buying those ads to come in here and to come into other states to misinform people and then to think we are too dumb to fight back."

Romney steered clear of his rival during a subsequent campaign appearance.

Gingrich later told reporters he decided to sharpen his criticisms after Romney's tax returns showed investments held in Cayman Island accounts, the government-backed mortgage company Freddie Mac and other entities.

"Here's a guy who owns Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae stock," Gingrich said. "He owns a Goldman Sachs subsidiary, which is foreclosing on Floridians. And on that front he decides to lie about my career? There's something about the hypocrisy that should make every American angry."

Romney has been hammering Gingrich for consulting work he performed for Freddie Mac and telling Florida voters that Gingrich was paid by a company that contributed to the state's poor housing market.

The acerbic remarks came three days after Gingrich took a much more moderate tone in a televised debate in Tampa, when Romney sharpened his own attacks. Gingrich strongly hinted he will be more aggressive in a CNN debate scheduled for Thursday night in Jacksonville.

Romney, meanwhile, toured a Jacksonville factory that is closing because of the economy before he addressed several hundred people gathered outside. He acknowledged that the live audience at Thursday's debate may be fairly raucous, a dynamic that seems to favor Gingrich and his populist, us-against-the-media and us-against-the-establishment style.

"There may be some give and take," Romney said. "That's always fun and entertaining, I know. If you all could get there, we'd love to see you all there cheering."

In his remarks, Romney criticized President Barack Obama and steered clear of Gingrich. He called Obama's administration a "Groundhog Day" presidency in which nothing gets better.

Polls suggest the Florida primary is close, coming 10 days after Gingrich beat Romney by 12 percentage points in South Carolina. Asked if he felt Florida was slipping toward Romney, Gingrich said, "I feel that it's useful for people to look at the totality of his record and ask yourself, `How can a guy who literally owns stock in a Goldman Sachs investment fund that forecloses on Floridians run the ads he's been running?'"

Goldman Sachs employees and their families contributed $367,200 to Romney's campaign through Sept. 30, his largest source of campaign contributions, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul also were participating in Thursday's debate, the final one before the GOP presidential primary in Florida on Tuesday. But both candidates have set their sights elsewhere and have largely stayed away from the Romney-Gingrich drama.

Whoever wins Florida will score something no one has yet claimed in a tumultuous primary season: a second victory. The first three contests have been won by three different candidates. Only Paul has yet to score a win.

The hits for Romney and Gingrich were coming from many directions.

The "super" political action committees backing them have spent more than $10 million combined on ads to date in Florida, far more than their respective campaigns. The Romney-leaning Restore Our Future has spent $8.8 million in ads as of late Tuesday, bringing to $14 million the total spent on ads supporting Romney in the state. That doesn't include money already spent on radio and Internet advertising.

As of late Tuesday, the Gingrich-backing Winning Our Future had booked $1.8 million in television ads in Florida, a check made possible by a new donation from Miriam Adelson. She and her husband, Sheldon, this month gave $5 million apiece to the group, which supports Gingrich but legally must remain independent.

Santorum, meanwhile, seemed to be recognizing that he stood almost no chance of winning Florida. He and his advisers planned no advertising in the state and instead were focused on raising money and calling potential supporters in upcoming states. He all but gave up trying to woo a network of pastors and was scaling back his schedule in Florida.

Chuck Laudner, an influential adviser who helped Santorum score an upset victory in the Iowa caucuses, was returning to the Midwest to start piecing together coalitions in Missouri and Minnesota. Both states have media markets that overlap with Iowa, where Santorum proved to be the big story.

Paul, virtually absent from Florida except for appearances built around the debates, was concentrating instead on caucus states where his loyal backers can carry a louder voice.

Gene Mutations May Boost Ovarian Cancer Survival: Study ...

Women with BRCA1, BRCA2 have higher risk for the disease, but prognosis might be better.

By Kathleen Doheny
HealthDay Reporter

TUESDAY, Jan. 24 (HealthDay News) -- Genetic mutations known as BRCA1 and BRCA2 raise the risk of getting ovarian cancer, but new research shows that those same mutations may boost a woman's odds of surviving the deadly disease.

Women with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer who carry the mutations have a better prognosis than women without the genetic variations, according to an analysis of 26 previous studies. The BRCA2 carriers, in particular, had a better five-year survival rate.

"Our paper provides definitive evidence that BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers have improvement in survival [compared to ovarian cancer patients without the mutations]," said Kelly L. Bolton, lead author of the new analysis and a medical student at the University of California, Los Angeles, David Geffen School of Medicine.

The study, which confirms previous findings, is published Jan. 25 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Nearly 23,000 women will get a diagnosis of ovarian cancer this year in the United States, and about 15,500 will die of it, according to the American Cancer Society. Epithelial ovarian cancer, the type Bolton focused on, occurs in the cells on the surface of the ovary.

Germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations are found in up to 15 percent of women with this type of cancer. A germline mutation is a gene change in a reproductive cell that can be passed on to offspring.

Data from more than 1,213 ovarian cancer patients was included in the studies reviewed. Of these, 909 had BRCA1 mutations; 304 had BRCA2 variations.

The studies also included 2,666 women who did not have the genetic mutations.

At the five-year mark, 44 percent of the BRCA1 carriers and 52 percent of the BRCA2 carriers were alive, compared to 36 percent of those without the mutation.

Bolton said the survival differences remained after the researchers took into account such factors as the stage of the cancer and age, although it was less significant among women with a family history of ovarian and/or breast cancer.

Exactly how the mutations may improve survival is not known. However, Bolton and others speculate the BRCA1 or BRCA2 status may modify the response to platinum-based chemotherapy, a common treatment.

The new analysis will have important implications for future research and treatment of ovarian cancer, the authors said. Routine genetic screening of women with high-grade cancer might be warranted, they added.

Dr. Elizabeth Poynor, a gynecologic oncologist and pelvic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, suggested the findings can help health care providers tailor treatment and more accurately counsel them regarding expected survival.

While not new, the information is valuable, Poynor said. "For a long time, we've known that individuals with BRCA1 or 2 actually have a better prognosis," she said. "This is not new information, it's expanded information. It's reinforcing what we already know."

More research is needed, the authors said, acknowledging some study limitations. For instance, the analysis lacked complete information on types of chemotherapy used, which might also have influenced survival.

Some co-authors reported consultancy fees from Complete Genomics Inc., a company engaged in gene sequencing, and from Merck Sharp & Dohme, Roche, Schering-Plough, Pfizer and other pharmaceutical firms.
