Enlightened, Season 2

Every week in Slate?s Enlightened TV club, Jeffrey Bloomer will have an IM conversation with a different fan of the show. This week, he rehashes episode 2.3 with David Haglund, the editor of Slate's culture blog, Brow Beat.

Jeff Bloomer: When Helen tried to read Amy's letter from Levi in the sunlight?in very Helen fashion?I thought we might spend another full episode chez Jellicoe. But then we took a welcome trip to Hawaii, where we learned that "some animals like to party." Best defense of needing to bury a six pack ever?

David Haglund: Ha. Maybe if, for you, like Levi, God is a beer on the beach. Either way, I was awfully glad to see Levi again, who for me was one of the brightest parts of a very bright first season, but who had been sadly absent so far. I've never quite understood why Luke Wilson hasn't had a bigger career; I've loved him ever since his hilarious performance in "Bad Blood," possibly the very best episode of The X-Files. He's great on this show?and especially in this episode.

Jeff: I was going to point to his heartfelt vampire hick on The X-Files as an early highlight too! I don't think he's ever been more convincing than he is on this show. It helps that there's a stolid, bruised integrity to Levi buried under all those pills and coke. He wasn't really buying Amy's paradise, or as he calls it, the "Hawaiian prison." What do you make of his stint in rehab?

David: I found it genuinely moving. One of the things I love about Enlightened is how it manages to be downright sincere about simple but essential human experiences without being sentimental. It helps in this instance that the show got so much about recovery right, from the physical (the "headaches, and phlegm, and farts," in Levi's words, that can take over a body that's been abused for so long) to the emotional (mostly, in Levi's case, the seemingly bottomless anger?about his dad, his mom's death, and about the things he thought he would get, and hasn't).

Jeff: Right?and Levi's inevitable relapse, then eventual peace with the program, almost make up a microcosm of the drama playing out in the series. His about-face with his roommate was lovely, and I was especially taken with his second letter to Amy, telling her that he was going to keep looking for the sea turtles. This show has its metaphors, and it's sticking with them.

David: It certainly is?and they're becoming pretty effective shorthand. "There was no turtle," Levi says. "Just a bunch of garbage at the bottom of the ocean."

Jeff: I am starting to feel for poor Christopher Abbott, also Charlie on Girls, who here befriends Levi as a prototypical addict who's nowhere near rock bottom. Those sad eyes may doom him to roles like this.

David: His crying jag after their night of debauchery slayed me; that self-hatred ("Dude, I'm such a piece of shit") was heartbreaking. And I thought Ashley Hinshaw, as the comely, troubled blonde, was excellent, too?as was Christopher Douglas Reed as Levi's flatulent but good-hearted roommate Tony. As for Levi, I do worry that picking Amy as his "higher power" could cause trouble down the road. I know that the higher power doesn't have to be God, but it probably shouldn't be your ex-wife, should it?

Jeff: No, especially not one as unstable as Amy. I also was struck by the way he described her in this episode: "She's not a bitch," he tells that curious blonde, which is apparently the best he can do. But he seems to be holding on to an earlier incarnation of Amy: the one from their marriage. Do you think Amy was different before? We know she was self-destructive before her breakdown, but who was she with Levi? Anything like she is now?

David: Good question. I guess my sense is that she hasn't changed much. She's still a "do-gooder," right? That's the other term Levi uses for her. And she really had an anger management problem, didn't she? Not a substance abuse problem?

Jeff: True?we?ve seen her party hard in flashbacks, but that wasn?t her undoing.

David: As an aside, this episode did make me wonder what kind of establishment Open Air is, in that it would treat such a wide range of issues. Also: How does Levi afford it? Does he have any money? Or just the best health insurance money can buy? A very niggling question, I realize, but one I couldn't totally shake.

Jeff: Yeah, it?s unlike Enlightened to pass off unexamined wealth as a means to an end. Amy still lives with her mother, after all, and others fear losing their jobs out loud. My sense is that his vague former life in semi-professional sports explains how he funds both his habits and his oceanside Hawaii treatment, but that?s just a guess.

David: Oh, right, the pro-sports background. I confess I'd forgotten about that. I'd also forgotten the exact cost of that bill Amy got from Open Air in Season 1; Google tells me it was $24,745. Levi must have been quite the prospect. (Granted, his expenses otherwise seem to be pretty low these days.) You're right that, for a show that generally takes economic reality seriously, the series kind of nudged it off the stage in this episode. On the other hand, it seemed to affect Ashley Hinshaw's character?s decision-making: Even after some coke and several drinks, that creepy older guy must have still looked terrible. But he apparently had his own plane, and she was "practically homeless," so ... Man, this episode was sad.

Jeff: Yes it was?but also appropriately cleansing, given how much time we've spent so far this season in the bowels of Abaddon. I suspect we'll return there next week, so for now, I say we accept what little peace Levi found by the end. Thanks for joining me!

David: Thanks, Jeff! I don't believe in much, but I believe in you.

Chile Food & Drink Report Q1 2013 - New Market Report Now ...

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/26/2013 -- We believe the impact of a Chinese hard landing will lead to slower Chilean real GDP growth. That said, private consumption has continued to perform well; we expected it to grow 5.3% in 2012. Unemployment has so far stayed lower than we expected, while real wages also are continuing to grow. Supporting the increase in private consumer spending has been steady growth in bank loans, a trend we expect to be sustained through 2013. Indeed, a cut to the monetary policy rate will allow credit to grow further and consumption to increase 5.5% in real terms in 2013.

Headline Industry Data (local currency)

? 2013 per capita food consumption value = +5.7%; forecast compound annual growth rate (CAGR) to 2017 = +5.7%. ? 2013 alcoholic drinks value sales = +6.4%; forecast CAGR to 2017 = +6.3%. ? 2013 soft drinks value sales = +8.0% ; forecast CAGR to 2017 = +8.1%. ? 2013 mass grocery retail value sales = +5.7%; forecast CAGR to 2017 = +5.7%.

Barry Callebaut Expands In Chile: In October 2012, Swiss business-to-business chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut signed a deal with Chile-based confectionery producer Arcos-Dos en Uno for the supply of compound and chocolate products. The move will see Barry Callebaut invest EUR13mn to build a new facility in the city of Santiago with capacity to produce 20,000 tonnes of chocolate products per year. The firm described the deal as its first long-term outsourcing agreement in South America, and the move fits with our favourable view of the regional confectionery sector as well as Barry Callebaut's stated desire to increase its exposure to emerging markets.

Cencosud Turns Attention To Colombia As Carrefour Exits: In October 2012, Chile-based retailer Cencosud announced it is to acquire the Colombian assets of French retailer Carrefour in a deal worth US$2.5bn. The move comes after the firm raised additional capital through a share sale in Chile and New York (via American depository receipts), which we said at the time was likely to be used to pay off debts and fund further expansion. We had speculated that the retailer was likely to be focused in Brazil, where it has been investing heavily since entering the market in 2007. However, the recent cooling of the Brazilian economy may have pushed the firm to look elsewhere, with Colombia's consumer sector currently outperforming its regional counterpart.

Dot Earth Blog: Weaker Global Warming Seen in Study Promoted by Norway's Research Council

Purveyors of climate doubt have seized on a news release from the Research Council of Norway with this provocative title: ?Global warming less extreme than feared?? The release describes new research finding that global warming from the buildup of greenhouse gases will be on the low end of the persistently wide spread of projections by other research groups. (There?s a presentation describing the work below.)

This may well end up being the case (I?d give it higher than even odds; even so, that doen?t justify an ?all clear? alert). But this particular analysis has, as yet, not been published in a peer-reviewed journal. This means that although the release comes from a prestigious government science agency, the work needs a publicity before publication caution label. I created one just for this purpose (above) and will use it when needed.

This is hardly the first instance of a promotion-before-review approach to climate discourse. For instance, Richard Muller?s Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature project took this path (one of that group?s five papers has finally made it into a journal). (This phenomenon is not limited to climate science, of course; here?s an example related to the fight over gas drilling.)

Earlier today I sent the following query to the Research Council of Norway and I?ll update this post when I hear more:?

With some urgency I?m trying to get some clarity on the status of the climate sensitivity analysis that the Research Council promoted yesterday. Is it published in a peer-reviewed journal? The only relevant study I could find was published last year (see below).

Perhaps it?s more like a U.S. National Academy report? If so, please describe the level of peer review. The work is being?aggressively disseminated?by bloggers and news outlets that focus on any research casting doubt on the importance of greenhouse-driven warming.

Thanks for any input clarifying the status of the research and explaining why it was released now if it?s?not yet accepted for publication?

I included a link to a presentation on the paper (which you can read below) and to this relevant paper from last year:

Bayesian estimation of climate sensitivity based on a simple climate model fitted to observations of hemispheric temperatures and global ocean heat content

Magne Aldrin,?Marit Holden,?Peter Guttorp,?Ragnhild Bieltvedt Skeie, Gunnar Myhre,?Terje Koren Berntsen

Here?s a presentation about the new analysis of global warming (the closest thing I?ve seen to the paper itself):

Norwegian Study Finds Limited Warming from Doubled Greenhouse Gases by Andrew Revkin

Finally, for those who want to dig in a bit, here?s a comment I received from Reto Knutti, a Swiss climate scientist, after I sent the Norwegian release and presentation around:

As you said, Aldrin et al. (DOI: 10.1002/env.2140) is published, whereas Skeie et al. is not yet as far as I know. But here are some thoughts that are largely independent of this paper to put these types of studies in context.

If you look at the Fig. 3a in our review (red lines at the top) you see that many previous estimates based on the observed warming/ocean heat uptake had a tendency to peak at values below 3?C (that review is from 2008). The Norwegian study is just another one of these studies looking at the global energy budget. The first ones go back more than a decade, so the idea is hardly new. The idea is always the same: if you assume a distribution for the observed warming, the ocean heat uptake, and the radiative forcing, then you can derive a distribution for climate sensitivity.

What is obvious is that including the data of the past few years pushes the estimates of climate sensitivity downward, because there was little warming over the past decade despite a larger greenhouse gas forcing. Also in some datasets the ocean warming in the top 700 meters is rather small, with very small uncertainties (Levitus GRL 2012), pushing the sensitivity down further. However, in my view one should be careful in over interpreting these results for several reasons:

a) the uncertainties in the assumed radiative forcings are still very large. Recently, Solomon et al. Science (2010, 2011) raised questions about the stratospheric water vapor and aerosol, and just days ago there was another paper arguing for a larger effect of black carbon (http://www.agu.org/news/press/pr_archives/2013/2013-01.shtml, a massive 280 pages?).

b) Results are sensitive to the data used, as shown by Libardoni and Forest DOI: 10.1029/2011GL049431 and others, and particularly sensitive to how the last decade of data is treated. Very different methods (detection attribution optimal fingerprint) have also shown that the last decade makes a difference (Gillett et al. 2011, doi:10.1029/2011GL050226).

c) The uncertainties in the ocean heat uptake may be underestimated by Levitus, and there are additional uncertainties regarding the role of deep ocean heat uptake (Meehl et al. 2011 Nature Climate Change).

Even though we have many of these studies (and I am responsible for a couple of them) I?m getting more and more nervous about them, because they are so sensitive to the climate model, the prior distributions, the forcing, the ocean data, the error model, etc. The reason for this, to a large extent, is that the data constraint is weak, so the outcome (posterior) is dominated by what you put in (prior).

It is important to note that the IPCC assessment of climate sensitivity is based on many lines of evidence (see Fig. 3 in our 2008 review for an overview). The observed energy budget is just one of them. The latest paleoclimate synthesis (Rohling et al. Nature 2012) supports the ?likely 2-4.5?C?, and all GCMs have sensitivities in the range 2-5?C, the mean in CMIP5 is above 3?C, and once you start evaluating models with observations that tends to get pushed upward (Fasullo and Trenberth, Science 2012).

Finally, note that the effect of the last few years of data is smaller on the transient climate response than on climate sensitivity. It?s the transient climate response (TCR) that determines the 21st century warming and peak warming.

NCAA announces problems with Miami investigation

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) ? The NCAA has found what it calls "a very severe issue of improper conduct" committed by former members of its own enforcement program during the Miami investigation, and will not deliver the long-awaited notice of allegations against the Hurricanes until an external review is completed.

NCAA President Mark Emmert announced the findings Wednesday. The sports governing body said former enforcement staff members worked with the criminal defense attorney for former Miami booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro "to improperly obtain information ... through a bankruptcy proceeding that did not involve the NCAA."

"I am deeply disappointed and frustrated and even angry about these circumstances," said Emmert, who also described it as "a shocking affair."

The NCAA would not reveal the name of the attorney involved. Shapiro has been represented by Maria Elena Perez, a Miami graduate. Perez did not immediately return a request for comment from The Associated Press on Wednesday. A person in Perez's office told the AP that the attorney was working in New York and would forward a message left at her office.

One key person in the investigation has been former Miami equipment-room staffer Sean Allen, who was deposed by Perez as part of Shapiro's bankruptcy proceedings. If the NCAA found it could not use the information gleaned in that particular deposition, that would be a development figuring to favor the Hurricanes

Miami President Donna Shalala in a statement released through the university that she is "frustrated, disappointed and concerned" that the NCAA may have compromised the investigation.

"As we have done since the beginning, we will continue to work with the NCAA and now with their outside investigator hoping for a swift resolution of the investigation and our case," Shalala said.

Shalala's statement also said Miami first informed the NCAA of possible violations more than two years ago.

"I have been vocal in the past regarding the need for integrity by NCAA member schools, athletics administrators, coaches, and student-athletes," Emmert said. "That same commitment to integrity applies to all of us in the NCAA national office."

Emmert said the NCAA learned of the alleged misconduct, in part, through legal bills presented by Shapiro's attorney for work that was not properly approved by the organization's general counsel's office.

"One of the questions that has to be answered, unequivocally, is what was the nature of that contractual arrangement and what was all the activity that that individual was involved with," Emmert said. "There is some uncertainty about all of that and it's one of the first orders of business for the firm that we've hired to investigate."

Emmert spoke angrily at times during a half-hour conference call to discuss the findings, in which he revealed that he briefed the NCAA's executive committee and the Division I board presidents with some information about the Miami matter. He said he developed a better understanding of what went on in the days that followed, which led to the hiring of Kenneth L. Wainstein of the firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP to conduct the external review of what happened.

Emmert said he hopes that process could be completed within two weeks, and that the investigation would continue with "appropriately acquired evidence."

The NCAA utilized information from two depositions conducted as part of the bankruptcy case, and Emmert said one of the questions he wants Wainstein's query to answer will be, "How in the world can you get this far without it being recognized that this was an inappropriate way to proceed?

"We cannot have the NCAA bringing forward an allegation that's predicted on information that was collected by processes none of us could stand for," Emmert said. "We're going to move it as fast as possible, but we have to get this right."

The Hurricanes' athletic compliance practices have been probed by the NCAA for nearly two years. Allegations of wrongdoing involving Miami's football and men's basketball programs became widely known in August 2011 when Yahoo Sports published accusations brought by Shapiro, who is serving a 20-year term in federal prison for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme.

Miami has self-imposed two postseason bans in response to the investigation. The Hurricanes also would have played in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game this past season, meaning they could have qualified for the Orange Bowl.

"Although we are deeply disappointed in this turn of events, we strongly support the actions President Emmert is taking to address the problem," said Lou Anna K. Simon, the NCAA's executive committee chair and Michigan State's president.

This would figure to be another significant issue for the NCAA and its enforcement department. Among the others pending:

? A California case filed by former Southern Cal assistant football coach Todd McNair, who said the NCAA was "malicious" in its investigation into his role in the benefits scandal surrounding Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Frederick Shaller said he was convinced the actions of NCAA investigators were "over the top."

? Earlier this month, the NCAA was sued by Pennsylvania Gov. Thomas W. Corbett, who claimed the sports governing body overstepped its authority and "piled on" when it penalized Penn State for the Jerry Sandusky scandal last summer. The governor asked a federal judge to throw out the sanctions, arguing that the measures ? which include a four-year bowl ban and $60 million fine ? have harmed students, business owners and others who had nothing to do with Sandusky's crimes.

And now comes Miami, an investigation that was believed to be nearing an end.

Many people who expected to be named in the notice of allegations had been briefed in recent days about what charges they may face, and the NCAA and Miami had reviewed some draft, or preliminary, findings.

Now the drawn-out inquiry has taken its most bizarre turn.

"In my two-and-a-half years I've certainly never seen anything like this, and don't want to see it again," Emmert said.

Military has to decide which combat jobs for women

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon's decision to lift the ban on women serving in combat presents a daunting challenge to top military leaders who now will have to decide which, if any, jobs they believe should be open only to men.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is expected to announce Thursday that more than 230,000 battlefront posts ? many in Army and Marine infantry units and in potentially elite commando jobs ? are now open to women. It will be up to the military service chiefs to recommend and defend whether women should be excluded from any of those more demanding and deadly positions, such as Navy SEALs or the Army's Delta Force.

The historic change, which was recommended by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, overturns a 1994 rule prohibiting women from being assigned to smaller ground combat units.

The change won't take place overnight: Service chiefs will have to develop plans for allowing women to seek the combat positions, a senior military official said. Some jobs may open as soon as this year, while assessments for others, such as special operations forces, may take longer. The services will have until January 2016 to make a case to that some positions should remain closed to women.

Officials briefed The Associated Press on the changes Wednesday on condition of anonymity so they could speak ahead of the official announcement.

There long has been opposition to putting women in combat, based on questions of whether they have the necessary strength and stamina for certain jobs, or whether their presence might hurt unit cohesion.

But as news of Panetta's expected order got out, many members of Congress, including the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., announced their support.

"It reflects the reality of 21st century military operations," Levin said.

Objections were few. Jerry Boykin, executive vice president of the Family Research Council, called the move "another social experiment" that will place unnecessary burdens on military commanders.

"While their focus must remain on winning the battles and protecting their troops, they will now have the distraction of having to provide some separation of the genders during fast moving and deadly situations," said Boykin, a retired Army lieutenant general. He noted that small units often are in sustained combat for extended periods of time under primal living conditions with no privacy.

Panetta's move comes in his final weeks as Pentagon chief and just days after President Barack Obama's inaugural speech in which he spoke passionately about equal rights for all. The new order expands the department's action of nearly a year ago to open about 14,500 combat positions to women, nearly all of them in the Army.

In addition to questions of strength and performance, there also have been suggestions that the American public would not tolerate large numbers of women being killed in war.

Under the 1994 Pentagon policy, women were prohibited from being assigned to ground combat units below the brigade level. A brigade is roughly 3,500 troops split into several battalions of about 800 soldiers each. Historically, brigades were based farther from the front lines, and they often included top command and support staff.

The necessities of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, however, propelled women into jobs as medics, military police and intelligence officers that were sometimes attached ? but not formally assigned ? to battalions. So while a woman couldn't be assigned as an infantryman in a battalion going out on patrol, she could fly the helicopter supporting the unit, or move in to provide medical aid if troops were injured.

And these conflicts, where battlefield lines are blurred and insurgents can lurk around every corner, have made it almost impossible to keep women clear of combat.

Still, as recent surveys and experiences have shown, it will not be an easy transition. When the Marine Corps sought women to go through its tough infantry course last year, two volunteered and both failed to complete the course. And there may not be a wide clamoring from women for the more intense, dangerous and difficult jobs, including some infantry and commando positions.

Two lawsuits were filed last year challenging the Pentagon's ban on women serving in combat, adding pressure on officials to overturn the policy. And the military services have been studying the issue and surveying their forces to determine how it may affect performance and morale.

The Joint Chiefs have been meeting regularly on the matter and they unanimously agreed to send the recommendation to Panetta earlier this month.

A senior military official familiar with the discussions said the chiefs laid out three main principles to guide them as they move through the process. Those were to maintain America's effective fighting force, preserve military readiness and develop a process that would give all service members the best chance to succeed.

Women comprise about 14 percent of the 1.4 million active military personnel. More than 280,000 women have been sent to Iraq, Afghanistan or to jobs in neighboring nations in support of the wars. Of the more than 6,600 U.S. service members who have been killed, 152 have been women.

The senior military official said the military chiefs must report back to Panetta with their initial implementation plans by May 15.

Tsutomu Nishijima, a spokesman for GS Yuasa, the battery manufacturer, said investigators visited the company's headquarters in Kyoto, Japan and that Yuasa was cooperating with the probe.

All 50 of the?787?Dreamliners that?Boeing?has delivered to airlines were grounded after an overheated battery forced the emergency landing of an All Nippon Airways?787?flight last week in western Japan.?Boeing?has halted deliveries of new planes until it can address the electrical problems.

Monday's investigation involved an introductory meeting and factory tour, with deeper studies into product quality and other issues to follow as the probe continues, said Tatsuyuki Shimazu, the chief air worthiness engineer at the Civil Aviation Bureau's Aviation Safety Department.

Two investigators from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and an investigator from Japan's government were conducting the probe into how the batteries are made and assembled and into any quality issues, he said.

"We are in the midst of collecting information, so as to whether there is a problem or not has not yet been determined," Shimazu said.

Nishijima of GS Yuasa said he could not comment on details of the investigation.

The burned insides of the ANA battery showed it received voltage in excess of its design limits. However, a battery that caught fire in a Japan Airlines?Boeing?787?in Boston earlier this month was found not to have been overcharged.

U.S. government investigators said there could still be problems with wiring or other charging components.

In the U.S., investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board planned to meet Tuesday with officials from Securaplane Technologies Inc., manufacturer of the charger for the 787s lithium ion batteries, at the company's headquarters in Tucson, Ariz., said Kelly Nantel, a spokeswoman for the board.

Leading Online Marketing Ideas To Expand Your Business

Posted by Sawyer Lunthmoreland on Jan 20, 2013 in Internet Marketing |

Internet marketing is the promotion of products over the internet. It easily brings together the creative aspects of the internet with the technical. This will bring a rise in sales to companies that put time into it. You will be reading many tips that will help you develop internet marketing for your company.

To create a quality newsletter, you need to write educational content. Your goal is to provide interesting information to your audience. Mention your products into your educational content, write informative texts about the products themselves, or explain how your product can have an educational use. Remember that people subscribed to your newsletter to learn something.

An important tip regarding Internet marketing is that if want to expand globally, you need to think globally. This is important because in order to best cater to people from other countries, you may wish to consider making changes to your site if it contains cultural sensitivities or humor intended solely for Americans.

It?s important that if you?re linking on someone else?s site for internet marketing that you make sure your link is a ?do-follow? link. You can click the page source of any link and look at the HTML. Unless it specifically says something to extent of ?do not follow," you know you?re safe here. Always be sure to check this.

Use forums to gain readers. Posting a teaser paragraph in several different forums can get people?s attention very quickly. The best way to do this is to find the forums that your target audiences frequent the most, and post it there. Make sure the paragraph is enticing and entertaining to gain the most.

Whether you?re allowing comments on your blog or website, you?re always going to run across a few jerks when running a business. Make sure you never reply to the buffoons of the world. Simply delete their comments and get on with your day. Do not appear childish by engaging in a back-and-forth with idiots.

When starting an online business, find a niche and become the authority on that product. For example, instead of selling shoes, sell extra wide shoes for men. While you narrow your playing field, you bring in traffic that has difficulty finding your product through other avenues, increasing your chances of making a sale. In addition, your business will be easier to find online because of your detailed key phrases. Try entering a search for ?shoes" and then enter a search for ?men?s extra wide shoes" and see what a difference a niche can make.

Internet marketing is often seen through banner ads, but these are not highly recommended. Do not invest much of your resources in banner ads if you want to successfully market your products or services online. Banner ads are increasingly being blocked with extensions in browsers, effectively deleting your ads from sites.

Creating a site map is very helpful for both search engines and visitors. It will help to find all of your pages, especially if you have a larger site. There are free tools that will help you create XML sitemaps, which are used by the major search engines to index webpages accurately.

Keeping yourself motivated is an important part of internet marketing and it is hard to keep your enthusiasm up if you keep jumping from project to project. Try sticking with just one project and stay with it until you see positive results. It may take some discipline, but it will be worth the effort.

When you concentrate on improving your internet marketing efforts, you are making excellent use of your valuable time. The marketplace accessible online is the largest in the world, and the potential customer base is incredibly vast. Reading articles like this one can pay off in a big way when you pick up useful new internet marketing tips.

Check out this additional training on Finding Profits Through Successful Internet Marketing Ideas. While you?re at it check out the many other resources that discuss Internet Marketing Strategies That Are Sure To Help Your Business Grow.

H Residence 1 Massive Three Level Family Residence in South Korea: H House

Located in Seoul, South Korea and envisioned by design group bang by min, the H-House resembles a modern fortress. When developing it, the architects were confronted with a few challenges: ?The site of H-House had the slope ground where the front level is lower with about 8m than the back level, which became a problem in designing. Besides this physical problem, the architect had more difficulties with the client?s demands ; to create a house for three generations, a house with good daylighting and ventilation on the basement and the first floor?.

The result is an originally-shaped structure, with functionally separate levels placed in a ?stack?. Different from every standpoint, the house is a display of modern creativity in architecture. The project is divided into three floors and a commercial unit for rent on the basement level. All the interiors are defined by space and design minimalism. Former President Bush released from Houston hospital

by KHOU.com staff & Associated Press

Updated today at 1:31 PM

HOUSTON?Former President George H.W. Bush has been discharged from a Houston hospital Monday after nearly two months of treatment for illness that began as a bronchitis-related cough.

Bush, the nation's oldest living president, has been hospitalized since Nov. 23, including a week in intensive care last month. He was also treated for a stubborn bacterial?infection and high fever.

"I am deeply grateful for the wonderful doctors and nurses at Methodist who took such good care of me," said President Bush in a written statement. "Let me add just how touched we were by the many get-well messages we received from our friends and fellow Americans. Your prayers and good wishes helped more than you know, and as I head home my only concern is that I will not be able to thank each of you for your kind words."

Spokesman Jim McGrath said Bush, 88, would go to his west Houston home.

Bush had been in the hospital for about a month before his office disclosed in late December that he was in intensive care because physicians were having difficulty controlling a fever that developed after the cough improved.

His office said on Dec. 29 that he had been moved back to a regular hospital room. Since then, his condition has continued to improve and he has been undergoing physical therapy to rebuild his strength.

"Mr. Bush has improved to the point that he will not need any special medication when he goes home, but he will continue physical therapy," Amy Mynderse, the doctor in charge of Bush?s care, said in Monday?s statement.

The former president suffers from a form of Parkinson?s disease that has forced him in recent years to use a motorized scooter or wheelchair to get around.

McGrath said the former president watched part of the Texans game against the Patriots Sunday.

He?s had several visits from family members throughout his hospitalization, including former President George W. Bush and even his pet dogs.

The nation?s oldest living ex-president and his wife, Barbara, spend winters in Houston and summers at their home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Bush and his wife, Barbara, live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine. On Jan. 6, they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary. They are the longest-married presidential couple.

Bush had served two terms as Ronald Reagan?s vice president when he was elected in 1988 to be the nation?s 41st president. Four years later, after a term highlighted by the success of the 1991 Gulf War in Kuwait, he lost to Democrat Bill Clinton amid voter concerns about the economy.

Bush has a long record of service, beginning with his enlistment in the Navy in World War II. At one point, he was the nation?s youngest naval aviator. He was shot down in the Pacific and rescued by an American submarine. He?s also been a congressman from Texas, U.S. ambassador to China and CIA director.

Amazon introduces AutoRip CD service in USA - Internet - News ...

A new service for Amazon customers in the US debuted yesterday. It?s called AutoRip and it means that, on an eligible selection of CDs, when you buy a music CD you will automatically get the digital version for free. The eligible selection is quite vast, I found some of my favourite obscure late 1980s CDs in there, and also the service is retrospective back to 1998, so many CDs you have purchased from Amazon before will now be available for you download or stream.

The AutoRip service, now live in the US, automatically adds your purchased CD music to the Amazon Cloud Player and lets you download tracks as 256kbps MP3s. CDs that are included in the AutoRip service have the AutoRip logo next to them and you can filter your CD music searches on Amazon to include the AutoRip feature.

If you have already signed up for an Amazon Cloud Drive you will be aware of the free 5GB of storage provided with that service. However the AutoRip service won?t start chomping away towards those data limits because Amazon will provide extra space for your AutoRip CDs at no extra charge.

Amazon hopes this service will help spur people to maintain a CD collection, bought from Amazon, and not give up on physical media for other services like iTunes. All of your Amazon AutoRip music will be available to Cloud compatible smartphones, tablets and PCs (as well as simply being downloadable) you will also own the physical CD media, packaging, artwork etc. It sounds like the best of both worlds...

So far the service is only for US residents and we have no information about when it will come to UK customers.

ZTE Grand S hands-on

ZTE Grand S handson

ZTE didn't wait for its official press event to take the official wraps off its latest flagship release, the Grand S: the company is previewing it in its booth. And in a rare match of marketing garble and specs, this grandiose moniker actually befits the hardware to which it's attached. For starters, the handset's decked out with a 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 2GB RAM and comes with Android Jelly Bean 4.1 pre-installed. But, its signature claim to mobile fame is its 6.9mm thickness -- a slim silhouette the company's billing as a "world's first." If you find that last bit hard to swallow, take note, that self-appointed distinction refers to its place in the 1080p smartphone space. We had a chance to spend some quality time with the device, so follow along after the break for our initial impressions.

MetroPCS reports decline in subscribers as it awaits merger

(Reuters) - MetroPCS Communications could not attract enough new paying customers to offset the loss of millions of subscribers fleeing its mobile phone service.

The company, which released its subscriber data for the quarter ending December 31, 2012, on Monday, said that additions to its service fell 29 percent.

The number of total subscribers fell 5 percent to 8.8 million, the first time that Metro PCS lost customers during a typically strong quarter, noted UBS analyst John Hodulik.

Shares of the company were down 2.6 percent at $9.48 on Monday morning.

The rate at which customers dropped the service, or "churn," was 3.6 percent for the quarter, almost unchanged from the same quarter a year ago.

The quarterly subscriber results come as MetroPCS awaits approval to merge with Deutsche Telekom unit T-Mobile USA.

"We believe this underscores the urgency with which the company pursued merger partners before reaching a deal with T-Mobile in October," Hodulik wrote.

On a more positive note, the Dallas-based company is gaining subscribers to its next generation network - 4G LTE or long term evolution. It said it increased the number of LTE customers 117 percent to more than 2.2 million, quarter-on-quarter.

Stanley McChrystal writes in a new memoir that he takes the blame for the Rolling Stone article that ended his Afghan command and army career, including for the unflattering comments attributed to his staff about the Obama administration. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, file)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Speaking out for the first time since he resigned, retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal takes the blame for a Rolling Stone article and the unflattering comments attributed to his staff about the Obama administration that ended his Afghanistan command and army career.

"Regardless of how I judged the story for fairness or accuracy, responsibility was mine," McChrystal writes in his new memoir, in a carefully worded denouncement of the story.

The Rolling Stone article anonymously quoted McChrystal's aides as criticizing Obama's team, including Vice President Joe Biden. Biden had disagreed with McChrystal's strategy that called for more troops in Afghanistan. Biden preferred to send a smaller counterterrorism and training force ? a policy the White House is now considering as it transitions troops from the Afghan war.

McChrystal adds the choice to resign as U.S. commander in Afghanistan was his own.

"I called no one for advice," he writes in "My Share of the Task," describing his hasty plane ride back to Washington only hours after the article appeared in 2010, to offer his resignation to President Barack Obama. McChrystal was immediately replaced by his then-boss, Gen. David Petraeus.

McChrystal devotes a scant page-and-a-half to the incident that ended his 34-year military career and soured trust between the military and media. The book, published by Portfolio/Penguin, an imprint of Penguin Group USA, comes out Monday.

The closest McChrystal comes to revealing his regret over allowing a reporter weeks of unfettered access with few ground rules comes much earlier in the book. "By nature I tended to trust people and was typically open and transparent. ... But such transparency would go astray when others saw us out of context or when I gave trust to those few who were unworthy of it."

McChrystal does try to explain the tensions that helped lead to Obama's decision to accept his resignation. At the center was the wrangle over McChrystal's recommendation for 40,000 more U.S. troops in Afghanistan ? and conflicting guidance.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates told McChrystal to request the number he thought he needed. White House staff signaled that the newly election president wanted to keep the levels down.

McChrystal describes how he presented his war goal to the White House as "defeat the Taliban" and "secure the population," and was advised to lower his sights to "degrade" the Taliban.

Obama approved the addition of 30,000 troops, while simultaneously announcing a withdrawal date of 2014. McChrystal did not challenge those decisions, though he says he worried the timetable would embolden the Taliban.

"If I felt like the decision to set a withdrawal date would have been fatal to the success of our mission, I'd have said so," he writes.

As for the Rolling Stone fallout, a Pentagon inquiry into the magazine's profile cleared McChrystal of wrongdoing and called into question the accuracy of the June 2010 story. The review, released in April 2011, concluded that not all of the events at issue happened as reported in the article.

Rolling Stone issued a statement saying it stood behind freelance writer Michael Hastings' story, which it called "accurate in every detail."

There is no bitterness or score-settling with the White House staff that had pushed for his departure over the article. McChrystal and the White House moved beyond the matter, and first lady Michelle Obama invited McChrystal to serve on the board of Joining Forces, a White House initiative for troops and their families.

The book details the general's rise through the ranks, from his time as a West Point cadet to serving in the 82nd Airborne Corps and earning his Special Forces Green Beret, and then commanding a battalion of the 75th Ranger regiment.

McChrystal describes only briefly an incident that nearly ended his career years earlier: allegations of a cover-up involving the friendly fire incident that killed football-star-turned-Army Ranger Pat Tillman. McChrystal approved a Silver Star for valor, with a citation that stated Tillman had been cut down by "devastating enemy fire."

But as reports came in from the troops at the scene, McChrystal realized Tillman may have died by fratricide. He sent an oblique warning to his superiors that President George W. Bush should delete mention of enemy fire from his remarks, when presenting the award to Tillman's family at his memorial service.

McChrystal told the investigators that he believed Tillman deserved the award, and that he wanted to warn top U.S. military and political leadership that friendly fire was a possibility. The Pentagon later cleared him of wrongdoing.

In the book, McChrystal writes only that he followed "standard practice" to quickly process a Silver Star for Tillman's actions on the battlefield, in time to present it to the family at the memorial service. He does not explain the incident further.

The man portrayed in the Rolling Stone article as arrogant comes off as far more down to earth in the book.

McChrystal writes of his doubts when he was asked to take charge of the military's top counterterrorism unit, the Joint Special Operations Command. He worried the troops would reject him because he had not served in any of its elite units such as the Army's Delta Force or the Navy's SEAL Team 6.

He says he helped JSOC evolve from a disconnected organization that was slow to catch targets early on in Iraq, because the operators lacked the manpower or communications equipment to analyze intelligence they gathered quickly enough. It eventually grew into closely networked teams that worked with the CIA and FBI and others to take down up to a dozen targets a night in Afghanistan, with intelligence gathered from the first target leading to the others.

At the request of Pentagon security reviewers, the former general made famous by his command at JSOC doesn't use that term, instead substituting "Task Force 714" for JSOC, "Green team" for Delta, and "Blue" for SEAL Team 6.

Those are part of the changes the general agreed to make, because those units and their missions are classified, according to two U.S. officials briefed on the security review. They spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The review process delayed the release of the book, which had been scheduled to come out in December. Pentagon officials decided to give the book another read, after a member of the Navy SEAL team that killed Osama bin Laden released an account of the raid without submitting the manuscript for a security review.

McChrystal said he "accepted many suggested changes and redactions, some reluctantly, particularly where public knowledge of facts and events has outpaced existing security guidelines," in order to "keep faith with the comrades I had served alongside."

Hugo Chavez Cancer: Venezuela VP Says Ailing Leader Still 'Delicate'

CARACAS, Venezuela ? Venezuela's opposition demanded that the government reveal specifics of President Hugo Chavez's condition Wednesday, criticizing secrecy surrounding the ailing leader's health more than three weeks after his cancer surgery in Cuba.

Opposition coalition leader Ramon Guillermo Aveledo said at a news conference that the information provided by government officials "continues to be insufficient."

Chavez has not been seen or heard from since the Dec. 11 operation, and Vice President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday said the president's condition remained "delicate" due to complications from a respiratory infection.

Maduro also urged Venezuelans to ignore rumors about Chavez's condition.

Aveledo said the opposition has been respectful during Chavez's illness, arguing that "the secrecy is the source of the rumors."

"They should tell the truth," Aveledo said, noting that Maduro had pledged to provide full reports about Chavez's condition. He reiterated the opposition's call for the government to release a medical report and said all indications are that Chavez won't be able to be sworn in to begin a new term Jan. 10.

If Chavez can't take office on that date, Aveledo said the constitution is clear that the National Assembly president should then take over temporarily until a new election is held. He said what happens next in Venezuela should be guided by "the truth and the constitution."

If Chavez dies or is unable to continue in office, the Venezuelan Constitution says a new election should be held within 30 days.

With rumors swirling that Chavez had taken a turn for the worse, Maduro said on Tuesday that he had met with the president twice, had spoken with him and would return to Caracas on Wednesday.

"He's totally conscious of the complexity of his post-operative state and he expressly asked us ... to keep the nation informed always, always with the truth, as hard as it may be in certain circumstances," Maduro said in the prerecorded interview in Havana, which was broadcast Tuesday night by the Caracas-based television network Telesur.

Both supporters and opponents of Chavez have been on edge in the past week amid shifting signals from the government about the president's health. Officials have reported a series of ups and downs in his recovery ? the most recent, on Sunday, announcing that he faced the new complications from a respiratory infection.

Maduro did not provide any new details about Chavez's complications during Tuesday's interview. But he joined other Chavez allies in urging Venezuelans to ignore gossip, saying rumors were being spread due to "the hatred of the enemies of Venezuela."

He didn't refer to any rumors in particular, though one circulating online had described Chavez as being in a coma.

Maduro said Chavez faces "a complex and delicate situation." But Maduro also said that when he talked with the president and looked at his face, he seemed to have "the same strength as always."

"All the time we've been hoping for his positive evolution. Sometimes he has had light improvements, sometimes stationary situations," he said.

Maduro's remarks about the president came at the end of an interview in which he praised Cuba's government effusively and touched on what he called the long-term strength of Chavez's socialist Bolivarian Revolution movement. He mentioned that former Cuban President Fidel Castro had visited the hospital where Chavez was treated.

In Washington, the U.S. State Department said procedures under the Venezuelan Constitution should be followed if Chavez is no longer able to carry out his duties as president.

"We want to see any transition take place in a manner that is consistent with the Venezuelan Constitution, that any election be fully transparent, democratic, free and fair," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters on Wednesday.

Asked if Chavez being out of the picture would make it easier to improve long-strained ties between Venezuela and the U.S., Nuland said, "Obviously we will judge our ability to improve our relationship with Venezuela based on steps they are able to take."

The U.S. Embassy in Caracas has been without an ambassador since July 2010. Chavez rejected the U.S. nominee for ambassador, accusing him of making disrespectful remarks about Venezuela's government. That led Washington to revoke the visa of the Venezuelan ambassador.

But recently U.S. and Venezuelan diplomats began high-level conversations aimed at improving relations, a U.S. government official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The official confirmed recent reports that Roberta Jacobson, assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs, spoke by telephone with Maduro in November and discussed ways of improving relations. He also confirmed that U.S. diplomat Kevin Whitaker had a subsequent conversation with Roy Chaderton, Venezuela's ambassador to the Organization of American States.

Venezuelan diplomats could not be reached to comment about those recent contacts with U.S. officials.

In Bolivia, meanwhile, President Evo Morales said he is concerned about his friend and ally.

"I hope we can see him soon," Morales said at a news conference Wednesday. "But it's a very worrying situation."

"I've tried to make contact with the vice president, and it's been difficult. I hope all of their aims are achieved to save President Chavez's life."

Before his operation, Chavez acknowledged he faced risks and designated Maduro as his successor, telling supporters they should vote for the vice president if a new presidential election was necessary.

Maduro didn't discuss the upcoming inauguration plans, saying only that he is hopeful Chavez will improve.

"Someone asked me yesterday by text message: How is the president? And I said, `With giant strength,'" Maduro said. He recalled taking Chavez by the hand: "He squeezed me with gigantic strength as we talked."
