Zynga game 'The Ville' lets you (virtually) get it on

3 hrs.

Things are getting hot and heavy in Zynga's newest Facebook game.?That is, if you consider some PG-rated?virtual sex to be hot and heavy.?

Following the success of games like "FarmVille," "CityVille" and "CastleVille," Facebook gaming giant?Zynga this week?launched its latest Ville game which is called simply?"The Ville."

This strategy-based life simulation?game lets players create a personalized avatar, build a home and live out virtual relationships.?And according to Zynga executive producer David Gray who spoke to CNET, the avatars in the game can (gasp!) make whoopee. Yes, whoopee.

Gray told CNET that it works like this:

...when someone is in your house and you begin to interact with them, you can level up by interacting with them in ways that the game sees as romantic. As you climb the experience tree, you eventually unlock the capability to initiate the "happiness home run," or just "whoopee"

Based on some of?the breathy Zynga?sex-related headlines making the Internet rounds this week (the above one included), this virtual sex business?may sound like?risque?stuff.

It is not.

Prudes (or concerned parents) can rest assured, making whoopee is pretty tame stuff. There is, apparently, partial disrobing before floating hearts cover the bedroom. Hide?your eyes! It's FLOATING HEARTS!?

Meanwhile, Zynga's frisky avatars are hardly the first to get it on Facebook style.

It's not an overstatement to say that "The Ville" has taken a whole lot of cues from the long-running, best-selling "Sims" games from?Electronic Arts -- and specifically from the new "Sims Social" game on Facebook. And those randy?Sims characters have been making quite a lot of woo-hoo (not to be confused with whoopee)?on Facebook for months now.

In fact,?In January, EA released this?infographic, announcing that "Sims Social" avatars make whoo-hoo?680,000 times per day. And here is the whoo-hoo in action. C'mon,?you know you want to see it:

Winda Benedetti writes about video?games for msnbc.com. You can follow her tweets about games and other things?on Twitter?here?@WindaBenedetti?and you?follow her?on Google+. Meanwhile, be sure to check?out the?IN-GAME?FACEBOOK PAGE?to discuss the day's?gaming news and reviews.?

USADA files formal charges against Armstrong

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has filed formal charges against Lance Armstrong, accusing the seven-time Tour de France winner of using performance-enhancing drugs throughout the best years of his career.

The agency notified Armstrong, former team manager Johan Bruyneel and several other Armstrong team associates of the charges in a letter on Thursday.

The charges came after a USADA review panel examined evidence in the case, which now goes to an arbitration panel to decide. If found guilty, Armstrong could be stripped of the Tour de France titles he won from 1999-2005. This year's Tour de France begins Saturday.

Armstrong maintains his innocence. Armstrong attorney Robert Luskin called the charges "wrong and baseless."

Also charged are team doctors Pedro Celaya Lezama and Luis Garcia del Moral; team trainer Pepe Marti, and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari. Because they are so closely linked, USADA rolled all of the charges into a single case.

Armstrong and the others "(have) been part of a doping conspiracy involving team officials, employees, doctors and elite cyclists," said the USADA letter, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.

The letter accuses Armstrong of using, possessing and trafficking banned substances including the blood-booster EPO, blood transfusions and steroids. The charges date back to 1998, after he had been declared cancer free but before his first Tour de France victory the following summer.

Bruyneel, who is currently the manager of the Radioshack-Nissan-Trek team recently announced he would skip this year's Tour because of the USADA investigation.

USADA says it has at least 10 former Armstrong teammates and associates who will testify against the cyclist, and blood samples from 2009 and 2010 that are "fully consistent" with blood doping.

Armstrong and the others charged have until July 9 to inform USADA if they plan to challenge the evidence before an arbitration panel.

The 40-year-old Armstrong retired from cycling last year, and in February a two-year federal investigation centering on alleged drug use by Armstrong and his teams closed with no charges being filed.

"It is the entirely predictable product of USADA's toxic obsession with Lance Armstrong and a process in which truth is not a priority," Luskin said. "There is not one shred of credible evidence to support USADA's charges and an unbroken record of more than 500 clean tests over more than a decade and a half to refute it."

The formal charges came after a unanimous recommendation from a three-person USADA review panel that looked at the evidence.

"All respondents will have the opportunity to exercise their right to a full public arbitration hearing, should they so choose, where all evidence would be presented, witness testimony would be given under oath," USADA said in a statement.

"USADA will continue to follow the established procedures that are compliant with federal law and were approved by athletes, the U.S. Olympic Committee, and all Olympic sports organizations."

The arbitration panel could meet by November, USADA said, but Luskin hinted Armstrong may file a federal lawsuit in an attempt to stop or delay the USADA investigation.

"Mr. Armstrong is exploring all his legal options," Luskin said.

Earlier in the day, Armstrong had gone on the attack against one of the review board members, Minneapolis attorney Clark Griffith, using his Twitter account to note that Griffith had earlier this year been charged in a misdemeanor case of indecent exposure.

"Wow. (at)usantidoping can pick em. Here's ... 1 of 3 Review Board members studying my case," Armstrong tweeted, linking to an online story about Griffith.

Griffith entered an Alford plea on June 13. Under the plea, Griffith did not admit doing anything wrong but acknowledged prosecutors have enough evidence for a jury to convict him. A 24-year-old student reported Griffith unzipped his pants in front of her on a St. Paul street.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 26. Griffith told the AP he's innocent and entered the plea to avoid a trial that would embarrass his family.

Griffith said Armstrong's tweet was "an effort to get away from the issues that will be dealt with by an arbitration panel. OK? By smearing me, that does nothing. I'm innocent of that."

USADA has not publicly released most of its evidence against Armstrong. Griffith would not discuss Armstrong's case in detail but said, "He's really scrambling .... I can't wait to hear what the arbitration panel thinks of the evidence."

The San Luis Obispo Blues continued their worst slide of the summer collegiate baseball season after getting blown out 16-3 to the Menlo Park Legends in their fourth consecutive loss at SLO Stadium on Friday night.

The Blues (16-10) allowed 12 hits and committed four errors.

Menlo Park scored eight of its runs in the ninth, when San Luis Obispo used three different pitchers to get through the inning.

Jeff Keller and Grant Nelson both went 3 for 5 for the Legends, with Nelson finishing with a home run and five RBI.

Skylar Brewer also finished with a homer for the Legends, who got a solid outing from pitcher Raymond Torres after he threw seven innings with three strikeouts.

The Blues tied it at 3 with a two-run third inning before adding another score in the fourth.

But Menlo Park added five more runs in the top of the fifth for a 7-3 lead.

Brandon Carr went 2 for 4 and Tanner Witt finished with two RBI for San Luis Obispo.

PALM SPRINGS POWER 8, SLO RATTLERS 5

San Luis Obispo led 3-0 in the second, but the Power exploded for a five-run third inning to take a 5-3 lead.

The Rattlers managed to tie it at 5 in the top of the fifth with two runs, but Palm Spring went on to score twice in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh.

Iran's dentist to the stars offers views on US

TEHRAN, Iran ? Prior to the Islamic revolution, Iran and America shared very good relations. The former Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, had an army with modern hardware supplied by the U.S. There were direct flights between New York City and Tehran and the city was full of hotels run by major American chains.

But the once-friendly relations between the two nations came to a screeching halt in 1979 when cleric-led radicals ousted the U.S.-backed shah and the subsequent Iran hostage crisis when 52 Americans were held in the U.S. embassy for 444 days.?

These days, Iranians? relations with America are somewhat schizophrenic ? the government is stridently anti-American, but many Iranians are not.?

That is the opposite of other countries in the region where governments receive large amounts of money and military hardware from the U.S., but whose people generally dislike America.

Tehran?s dentist to the stars
A popular dentist in an affluent part of Tehran represents the love-hate relationship many Iranians feel toward the U.S.

In his Park Avenue-style dental practice, the latest Newsweek, Time and Architectural Digest magazines are on offer in the waiting room. A large flat-screen TV sits on the wall, along with an expansive fish tank and a framed dentistry degree from New York University.?

Iranians are consumers who love brand names ? even when it comes to their dental care. When a friend of mine introduced me to the dentist, he told me he is the guy to go to if I wanted to brag about where I get my teeth cleaned. He is, in essence, Tehran?s equivalent of a Beverly Hills ?dentist to the stars.?

A large part of his reputation comes not just from the fact that he has all the latest, modern dentistry equipment, but that he was trained in the U.S. and offers Western-style service. He was educated in dentistry at NYU and lived, worked and studied from the East Coast to West Coast.

Reuters

Coffee mugs bearing pictures of the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs are on sale as a man works on a MacBook at a shop in northern Tehran on Jan.19, 2012. Despite the fact that Apple observes a U.S. embargo that restricts the sale of their goods in Iran, their products are wildly popular there.

Sporting fashionable glasses, a crisp blue button-down shirt and tie, the dentist, who is in his mid-40s, agreed to speak with me on the condition of anonymity. ?

?I am who I am because of my education in the States,? said the dentist. ?I am very American, but my view on U.S. politics is very different.?

I asked him what he thought about the tough economic sanctions being imposed on Iran ? which block access to the international banking system and hurt?sales of Iranian crude oil ? as a way to persuade Tehran to abandon its nuclear program.

Iranians feel the pain of sanctions: 'Everything has doubled in price'

?Why are there sanctions against Iran?? he said. ?Wasn?t it America that helped Iran fire up its nuclear program 35 years ago? The sanctions just hurt ordinary people.??

At the same time, he praised Iranians? resilience.

?After 30 years of sanctions, embargoes, war and threats of war, Iran has kept its head above water,? he said. ?Most other countries would have collapsed, but Iranians have found ways to circumvent these problems; they help each other.?

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

The dentist believes that one reason for? misunderstanding between America and Iran is that Americans have little real information on Iran ? that they know only what they see on TV, which is often a very small part of the bigger picture.

For years, he says, he tried to convince American colleagues to give lectures on dentistry in Iran, but that they were reluctant to do so because of their perceptions. When one of them finally agreed to come, and experienced the famous Iranian hospitality and warmth, his perception of Iran changed very quickly.

Asked why he came back to Iran about eight years ago after spending most of his life in the States, he said he just felt like something was missing, adding that he loves Tehran because it?s like New York City ? a noisy, fast-paced 24/7 place.

Steve Jobs photos on the wall
The desire for brand names in Iran that signify Western quality goes beyond dentistry.?

Mohsen, who agreed to speak with me on condition that only his first name be used, owns an electrical goods store in Tehran selling mostly black market Apple products. (Typically, Apple, as well as other imported goods that would be subject to U.S. embargoes, come into Iran via Dubai and the Persian Gulf. They are sold openly in stores in Tehran).?

He said that most Iranians love American products and culture and that personally he longs for the day that the two countries have normal relations.

Then a frown appeared on his face. ?But,? he said, ?they do things that even rub a moderate person, like me, the wrong way.?

?I read an article yesterday about an Iranian-American who went into an Apple store in the States and wanted to buy an iPad to send to her uncle in Tehran. When the sales person found out she was Iranian and wanted to send the iPad to Iran, the store refused to sell it to her,? he said.

?This is crazy! I sell 50 iPads and iPhones here a week. I have a picture of Steve Jobs on the wall! These sorts of things don?t do any good for relations between Iranian and American people.??

The story Mohsen related was widely reported in the U.S. An Apple employee in Atlanta declined to sell an iPad to an Iranian-American customer, citing company policy that aims to comply with U.S. trade sanctions with Iran that can lead to individual fines of up to $250,000. ?

Iran trade sanctions get personal in Apple stores??

In the meantime, Mohsen?s Apple products will have to remain on the black market.?

Still, not all Iranians have such a moderate view towards the U.S. Hussein, a hard-line student at Tehran University, has a very negative view of the States. (He also spoke on condition that only his first name be used.)

?All America has done is try to bully Iran, chip away at its nuclear rights and steal our oil,? Hussein said.

?I don?t think we should be talking to the Americans because ultimately they want our demise,? he said. ?Throughout history, they have interfered in our country, only harming us. We have nothing in common.?

How good can the Nats get?

Top 3 pitchers are reminiscent of the 1990s Braves, and the bats are coming alive

Heading into an NL East showdown series with the Braves, the Nationals own the National League's best record.

OPINION

updated 4:45 p.m. ET June 29, 2012

Tony DeMarco

On the eve of Davey Johnson's one-year anniversary as the Washington Nationals' manager, the offense did things it never had done for him.

The Nats scored 12 runs, the most in Johnson's tenure, tied a Nationals record with 21 hits and set a record with 11 extra-base hits in a 12-5 rout of the Colorado Rockies. And then the next night, they added 11 more runs for their first back-to-back games of 11 or more runs since 2005.

"They finally started listening to me,'' Johnson joked. "It only took them a year.''

Coors Field has been the ultimate slump-buster throughout its 18-year history, and It certainly helps to run into the Rockies while their highly questionable two-tiered rotation experiment continues. But that double dose of good timing aside, there's much to smile about in the Nationals' world these days:

With the Los Angeles Dodgers' recent skid, the Nationals own the National League's best record at 43-31 through Thursday. Heading into an NL East showdown series this weekend in Atlanta, the Nationals have led the division for all but 10 days, currently by 3 1/2 games. Nobody has a better road record since last Sept. 12.

And of course, the Nationals lead the majors in team ERA, strikeouts/nine innings, runs allowed, WHIP and opponents' OPS.

And they've accomplished all of this short-handed. Every team has injuries, but key ones, like those to Michael Morse, Ryan Zimmerman, Jayson Werth, Drew Storen and Wilson Ramos, can decimate even the deepest of rosters. Morse and Zimmerman are back, but the latter three still are missing-in-action.

"It's a testament to the depth we created in the offseason; to the scouts and player-development people,'' general manager Mike Rizzo said. "We're in first place, but we're always trying to build onto what we have. We have one of the youngest teams in baseball, and we feel we're not even scratching surface of our ability levels. We feel like we're just starting to hit on all of our cylinders.''

And to think that one year ago, Jim Riggleman walked away from the manager's job, upset that no contract extension had come his way. Maybe that extension never was going to be offered, but if there ever was a head-scratcher of a decision, Riggleman's was it.

The Nationals are 83-73 in the calendar year under Johnson, who clearly is enjoying himself in this Jack McKeon-esque renaissance. Johnson is 69, and although he speaks more softly than he used to, much of his signature bravado remains.

Forty-seven years after his major-league debut with the Baltimore Orioles, he's dead certain of his convictions, and that seems to bridge whatever generation gap exists between him and his players, the youngest of whom is 19-year-old phenom Bryce Harper.

"Davey has done everything you can do in the game,'' Rizzo said. "Terrific All-Star player, second baseman who hit 43 home runs, Gold Glove defender. He's been the manager of the year, played on a World Series champion, managed a World Series champion.

"When Davey Johnson says something, these guys listen, because he's done it. They know he's there to help them. He's willing to share his knowledge, and the guys just feed off that.''

The Coors Field-fed offensive surge has only boosted clubhouse confidence, as the Nats have busted out of a recent 3-7 stretch in which they averaged only 2.5 runs per game.

"We knew we'd come around,'' Zimmerman said. "We're too good of a team not to score runs all year long. Lucky for us, we have a really good pitching staff that has been the backbone of this team and helped us get to where we at.''

Here's how much pitching coach Steve McCatty's staff has carried the load to date: The Nats are 12th in the NL in runs scored, ahead of only the Marlins, Cubs, Padres and Pirates, yet have a +46 run differential, second only to St. Louis.

Granted, it's way early. But there are similarities to the Braves' top-three rotation dominance of the 1990s. Ace Stephen Strasburg needs no further explanation. The acquisition of Gio Gonzalez from the financially strapped Oakland A's puts Rizzo in the Executive of the Year discussion. And underrated ground-ball machine Jordan Zimmermann could be the ace of some staffs, but is the No. 3 guy here.

Unfortunately, Zimmermann also has a bit of a Matt Cain-snakebit thing going on, as he is 4-6 despite a 2.77 ERA. Wednesday's 11 runs of support skews the numbers that have him receiving one or fewer runs in six of his 15 starts this season, and in 19 of 48 starts since returning from Tommy John surgery last season.

So deep is the rotation that you can count nine starters (with Ross Detweiler, Chein-Ming Wang and Tom Gorzelanny pitching out of the bullpen, and John Lannan, who won 10 games last season, stuck in Triple-A.). That depth could prove vital if and when Strasburg's innings begin to be limited.

The target number isn't likely to exceed 180, and since he's exactly halfway there, it's quite possible that Strasburg could skip a start or two along the way, or be pushed back a day on occasion. Clinching a playoff spot early enough certainly would help, but it's a fine line that the organization will tread down the stretch.

But believe Rizzo when he says, 'we're here to win now, but we're also here to win long-term', and know that means there will be no pushing Strasburg too far.

If the Nationals seem overly skittish about innings limits, at least part of the reason why is McCatty, who is well-versed in the subject ? himself a victim of Billy Martin's abuse of the 1980-81 A's rotations.

In 1980, McCatty threw 221.2 innings including 14 in a 2-1 loss to Seattle, and four other pitchers ages 25-28 ? Rick Langford (290 innings), Mike Norris (284.1), Matt Keough (250) and Brian Kingman (211.1) ? combined to make 159 starts.

The following year, they benefited from a strike-shortened 1981 season that stopped at 109 games, but by 1984, all were either ineffective, injured or in the cases of Kingman and Norris, out of the majors.

Slowly but surely, the bats are returning to the lineup, taking pressure off the staff. Zimmerman spent time (April 21-May 7) on the disabled list due to a shoulder trouble that has limited him, and since receiving a cortisone shot on Sunday, has been on a tear that included his 1,000th career hit.

After his breakout 2011, Morse didn't play until June 2 due to a lat injury. After 23 games, he is just beginning to feel comfortable and be productive. Werth (wrist) could be back in August. So even though Rizzo reportedly made a fact-finding call to Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd about Carlos Gonzalez's potential availability (no-go for CarGo), Rizzo feels there is enough offense currently on the roster to win.

"Any team that goes extended periods without their 3-4-5 hitters in the lineup is going to struggle to score runs,'' Rizzo said. "We haven't had our 3-4-5 hitters in the same lineup all season. We're definitely anxious to see that happen. We feel confident this is a potent offense. Once we swing the bats like capable of, we feel we're going to be a very dangerous team to play.''

At least part of that confidence is due to Harper's immediate impact. He's not a center fielder long-term, and that's a spot Rizzo will have to address. But expecting anything more from a 19-year-old this season just wouldn't be right.

"As far as skill level on the field, he is as advertised,'' Rizzo said. "He's taken to all facets of the game. He's new to the outfield, and he's taken to that.

"Where he's exceeded expectation is the way he's handled himself in the clubhouse, in the community. He's been terrific. He's been a great teammate, and a guy the other guys really care about and protect.''

Iconic Atari turns 40, tries to stay relevant

(AP Photo/Charlie Knoblock)

(AP) ? A scruffy, young Steve Jobs worked at Atari before he founded Apple. "Pong," one of the world's first video games, was born there, as was "Centipede," a classic from the era of quarter-guzzling arcade machines. "Call of Duty" creator Activision was started by four of Atari's former game developers.

The iconic video game company turns 40 years old this week, much slimmer these days as it tries to stay relevant in the age of "Angry Birds" and "Words With Friends."

But Atari's influence on today's video games is pervasive.

Although it wasn't the first company to make video games, Atari was the first to make a lasting impression on an entire generation. At arcades ? or at video game bars such as Barcade in the trendy Williamsburg section of Brooklyn ? nostalgic patrons still gather around such Atari classics as "Asteroids," ''Joust" and "Centipede."

The Atari 2600, launched in 1977, was the first video game console in millions of homes, long before the Nintendo Entertainment System (1985), Sony's PlayStation (1994) and Microsoft's Xbox (2001).

Today's younger iPhone gamers might not remember how "Pong," that simple, two-dimensional riff on Ping-Pong, swept across living rooms and arcades in the 1970s. But they might recognize elements of it in easy-to-learn, hard-to-master games based on simple physics ? among them, "Angry Birds."

"For tens of millions of Gen X-ers, or kids who grew up in America in the '70s and '80s, Atari is a cultural icon, an intrinsic part of childhood," says Scott Steinberg, tech analyst and author of "The Modern Parent's Guide to Kids and Video Games."

"Pong," he adds, was in some ways the very first social video game, one designed to play in bars, at home or at an arcade, while spectators crowded around to watch the action.

Launched in 1972 from Atari's Silicon Valley headquarters, "Pong" featured a basic black-and-white screen (that's black and white only, no shades of gray here), divided by a dotted line. Short white lines on either side stood in for paddles. Two players controlled them and tried to get a moving dot ? the ball ? past their opponent.

With "Pong," Atari introduced video games to the masses just as Apple and Microsoft ushered in the personal computer era by bringing computers to people's desktops in the 1980s.

"It makes me think that I am getting really old," says Nolan Bushnell, the co-founder of Atari. "I'm 69, which means I was 29 when I founded Atari. It seems really young in retrospect."

It doesn't take much effort these days to see 20-something entrepreneurs in technology. Mark Zuckerberg was just 19 when he started Facebook in his Harvard dorm room. But back in the early '70s, Bushnell said, "no one in their 20s started companies. In some ways it paved the way for Apple, Microsoft and those guys."

Bushnell said Atari succeeded early on because it nurtured ideas from its engineers and computer programmers.

"We dominated not because of our manufacturing and marketing prowess but because of creativity," Bushnell says. "The lasting legacy: That creativity is a real weapon. And in some ways Apple has shown that as well."

Jobs was just 19 when Atari hired him as a technician, making $5 an hour. He worked the night shift because many of his co-workers didn't get along with him and didn't appreciate his refusal to wear deodorant, according to Walter Isaacson's recent biography of the late Apple chief executive.

He wasn't there for long ? he left the company in 1974 to travel to India and co-founded Apple two years later, in 1976.

Dona Bailey, one of the creators of "Centipede," recalls a notebook that Atari had with maybe 30 ideas for games in it.

"Most of them were laser games," says Bailey, who was the only female programmer in Atari's arcade division when she was hired in 1980 and when she left in 1982. "I wasn't really interested in war, or lasering anything, or violence."

The only ideas in the notebook that didn't have to do with "lasering things or frying things" were two sentences about a multi-segmented insect that walks out on the screen and winds its way down the screen toward the player, she says. There was implicit shooting, as the player at the bottom had to destroy the insect before getting hit by it, but "it didn't seem that bad to shoot a bug."

Thus, "Centipede" was born.

Atari, Steinberg says, pioneered a lot of the concepts that are popular in gaming today: Games should be for both men and women, and they should be social by allowing many people to compete with each other.

Atari "defined games as not just a product but a social movement," Steinberg says.

But there is a generational divide. For kids born in the '80s and later, Atari elicits a respectful nod as a retro video game icon at best ? and a clueless shrug at worst.

"It may rise again, but it remains to be seen whether Atari's place is among retail giants (such as) Activision and Electronic Arts," Steinberg says, "Or in a future that is defined by its own past."

Activision, which now makes such hit games as "Call of Duty" and "Diablo III," was founded in 1979 by four disgruntled Atari game designers who wanted more recognition for their work.

As Activision's future rose, Atari's faltered. Having cemented video games as a form of mass entertainment, Atari was sold to Warner Communications Inc. in 1976 and began to pile up big losses.

Warner, now part of Time Warner Inc., discontinued the Atari 2600 and fired Bushnell, says Stephen Jacobs, professor of interactive games and media at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y.

Meanwhile, several companies tried to capitalize on Atari's success, but flooded the market with terrible products. It was a gold rush, with little gold to be had.

Atari contributed to that decline in quality with "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," still considered one of the worst video games ever made ? and that's being generous.

"They tried to push something out in six weeks," Jacobs says. "They pushed out a million units of a horrible game that they were sure was just going to be the bomb. And it ended up tanking Atari."

That was the Christmas of 1982. What followed is now referred to as the "great video game crash of 1983." People stopped buying video games.

Companies began collapsing and Atari was soon sold to a man named Jack Tremiel. Over the next decade, Atari made computers, a game console called Jaguar and a handheld game machine called the Lynx. None were hits.

Atari was then passed to the toy company Hasbro, then to Infogrames Entertainment, a French company that owns it today.

Recognizing the promise of mobile devices and its best-known titles, Atari today makes such phone games as "Centipede: Origins" and "Breakout Boost," a take on the game Steve Jobs worked on back in the day.

"The legacy is that Atari is essentially where it all began," says Jim Wilson, the company's current CEO.

So is Atari living off its legacy?

"To a certain point almost all entertainment companies are doing a bunch of living on their legacy. That's why we have 'sequel-itis' in triple-A games, movies, books," Jacobs says. "Why invest in new things when you can beat the old things to death and still make money out of them?"

Three cardinal rules of mobile computing

Michael Lasky

Whether it?s notebooks, tablets, phones, peripherals, or even software, we want three things from our mobile tools: they must be light, fast, and intuitive to use.

Here is a quartet of products that meet those rules for the road.

Thin and light ? and bigger ? portable PC

To fulfill the rule of lighter-faster-easier, Lenovo?s ThinkPad T430s (info page) starts with a carbon fiber?reinforced chassis that helps pare its weight down to just 4.2 pounds. For a 14-inch display notebook, that?s light! In addition, the T430s is equipped with Lenovo?s proprietary RapidBoot technology, which gives it a perceptibly faster Windows 7 Professional boot up than typically seen on many other Win7 machines. And if you?re into cutting-edge qualities, this portable has an optional Windows 8?like interface that launches applications and utilities with a single click. (See Figure 1.)

Optional Lenovo startup screen

Figure 1. The T430s comes with an optional startup screen that's reminiscent of the forthcoming Windows 8.

An inch thick, the T430s includes a lithium-ion battery that delivered nearly five hours of power in my informal tests ? enough time to watch Avatar and get some work done, too. Watching the movie was visually pleasing on my review unit. It came with a crisp, 1600?900 HD display (a 1366?768 display knocks U.S. $50 off the standard price) driven by an optional Nvidia NVS 5400M graphics card with 1GB VRAM ($330 extra).

Most laptops and Ultrabooks have reduced size and weight by eliminating built-in optical drives. However, that?s a problem when you want to load applications or grab a movie out of Redbox. The T430s includes a DVD/CD multiburner, adding a bit to its weight and thickness. However, it?s good to have the option. You can also order a second battery that slips into the drive bay for extended power.

On the other hand, you?ll want a good set of headphones when watching movies or listening to music ? Lenovo has put two mediocre speakers on either side of the keyboard.

Lenovo T430s

Figure 2. Lenovo's light and fast T430s

Going back to the days when IBM held the brand, ThinkPads have always sported the best notebook keyboards ? bar none. So why, oh why did Lenovo switch to the island-style (or chiclet) keyboard for the T430s? Although still comfortable with providing great feedback, the key spacing guarantees mistypes galore. I know, I know. You just have to get used to it, but it?s a pity that Lenovo had to ?improve? on keyboard perfection to satisfy obvious MacBook envy.

High court to deliver health care ruling Thursday

(AP) ? They've known the outcome for three months. Now it's time for the nine Supreme Court justices to share it with the world.

Barring some incredibly strange twist, shortly after 10 o'clock in the morning Thursday, Chief Justice John Roberts is expected to reveal the high court's verdict on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Between 400 and 500 people will crowd into the marble courtroom, the only witnesses to a historic moment that will not be broadcast live on television or radio. Some of those hoping for seats already were in line early Wednesday afternoon.

The court is not just passing judgment on a major expansion of the social safety net, designed to cover an additional 30 million Americans with health insurance. It is doing so on the president's signature domestic legislative achievement and in the heat of his closely fought campaign for re-election.

Four major issues await resolution, the most important of which is whether the law's centerpiece requirement that most people have health insurance or pay a penalty is constitutional. The justices also are weighing whether other parts or indeed the entire 2010 law should fall if they strike down the insurance requirement.

Apart from the insurance mandate, the court also is considering the validity of the health care law's significant expansion of Medicaid, the joint federal-state health care program for the poor.

One wrinkle could prevent the court from deciding the fate of the insurance requirement. A mid-19th century law prohibits challenges to taxes until they have been paid. The insurance requirement does not kick in until 2014 and people who pay the penalty won't do so until they file their 2014 income tax forms by April 15, 2015.

The court devoted more than six hours to arguments about these issues over three days in late March. The justices met March 30 to take a vote on the case and sort out who would take the lead in writing the opinions. In a case of this magnitude, the chief justice probably is writing the majority opinion, assuming he is in the majority.

The 26 states and the small business group challenging the law seemed to have the better of the courtroom arguments in March. Conservative justices peppered Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. with hostile questions about both the insurance requirement and the Medicaid expansion.

But the lively arguments, the only time the justices discuss pending cases in public, are a relatively small part of a rather large record ? in this case, a mountain of more than 140 legal briefs.

Whatever the outcome, it seems certain to become part of the campaign between Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney.

Obama could try to make the court itself, or more particularly its conservative majority, an issue if the insurance requirement or the whole law is struck down. For his part, Romney already has said he will try to take advantage of either outcome. If the law falls, Romney said it will show that "the first 3 1/2 years of this president's term will have been wasted on something that has not helped the American people." If the law is upheld, "we're going to have to have a president ? and I'm that one ? that's going to get rid of Obamacare. We're going to stop it on Day One," Romney said.

The case began almost as soon as Obama signed the law on March 23, 2010. Even before the day was out, Florida and 12 states filed the lawsuit that ended up at the Supreme Court. Another 13 states later joined in later.

The heart of the challenge was the claim that Congress could not force people to buy a product ? health insurance.

The administration advanced several arguments in defense of Congress' authority to require health insurance, including that it falls under the power to regulate interstate commerce.

The government also argued that the insurance requirement was necessary to make effective two other undoubtedly constitutional provisions: the requirements that insurers accept people regardless of existing health problems and limit what they charge older, sicker people.

The administration also said that even if the court rejected the first two arguments, the insurance requirement and penalty are constitutional as an exercise of Congress' power to enact taxes. The penalty assessed for not buying insurance functions like a tax, the government said.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's health care overhaul is on the way to its ultimate jury: the families, doctors, business people and state officials who'll have to grapple with the confusing details while striving to fulfill its promise.

With the Supreme Court hurdle cleared, open enrollment for millions now uninsured is scheduled to begin 16 months from now, in October 2013. Much of the health care industry is ready. People who do have insurance won't have to worry about the loss of popular new benefits, such as coverage for young adult children or improvements to Medicare's prescription plan.

And, starting in 2014, insurance companies will no longer be able to turn away people with a history of medical problems, or charge them more.

But carrying out the law will be a mad scramble for states, especially Republican-led ones where officials had hoped this day wouldn't come. And the court added a new complication by giving individual states more leeway to turn down the law's expansion of Medicaid, expected to provide coverage to about 16 million uninsured people.

After the ruling, chances of repealing the entire law appear much slimmer for Republicans, although they will again make it an election rallying cry. However, a targeted repeal strategy aimed at individual components of the law including cost controls, taxes and spending cuts, may still work.

Vicki McCuistion of Driftwood, Texas, who shuttles between two part-time jobs and is uninsured, said the Supreme Court ruling has given her new hope. Her husband Dan has back problems so bad he can't go to work some days, and with a family history of skin cancer she is worried about a mole that she hasn't been able to get checked by doctors.

"Having access to health insurance that we can actually afford would allow us to improve our lives," McCuistion said Thursday.

At the White House, Obama repeated his promise that the Affordable Care Act will both deliver health insurance and help get a handle on growing costs. But the glow of victory may be brief. Even some supporters of the law candidly admit it's only a first installment ? a way to get most of the population covered before tackling costs forcefully. Wrenching choices about Medicare and Medicaid cuts could come as early as next year.

Thursday's decision moves the United States closer to other economically advanced countries that for years have guaranteed health insurance to their citizens.

The law's controversial mandate that individuals have health insurance or pay a fee ? upheld by the court on Thursday ? will affect relatively few people, because more than eight in 10 Americans already have coverage. But employers with 50 or more workers will face fines if they don't provide insurance for employees.

The law is expected to extend coverage to about 30 million of the estimated 50 million uninsured. Illegal immigrants will represent a large share of those still without coverage, but 90 percent of citizens and legal residents will have insurance.

The focus now quickly shifts from Washington to the states.

While health insurers, big hospitals and major employers have spent the last two years planning and carrying out the law, states are all over the lot.

Although they are expected to play a crucial role in delivering insurance to their residents, only 14 states, plus Washington D.C., have actually adopted a plan for doing so. Hoping the law would be overturned, Republican governors and legislatures have resisted setting up new insurance markets that are a linchpin of the legislation, and that could turn into a problem for the whole country.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners expects only about half the states to be ready to set up new health insurance markets, slated to open for business on Jan. 1, 2014.

If states aren't ready, the law calls for Washington to step in and run things. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says the feds are ready to do that.

State plans for the markets ? called exchanges ? are due to the federal government this fall. Washington will run the exchanges in states that lag behind. The new Internet-based markets are supposed to provide one-stop shopping for health insurance, steering middle-class households to private plans and low-income people to an expanded version of Medicaid, the federal-state program for the poor and disabled.

But the court added a new wrinkle, ruling that states cannot be threatened with the loss of their entire Medicaid allotments if they refuse to carry out the expansion, which is geared largely to helping uninsured low-income adults. Under the law, the federal government will pick up all of the cost for the first three years, eventually dropping to a 90 percent share.

Matt Salo, head of the National Association of State Medicaid Directors, said it's too early to tell what states will do.

"This opens up what was a mandate into a state option, and states are going to have to think very, very carefully as they weigh all the political, policy and fiscal ramifications of the decision," Salo said.

States that turn down the money will still be stuck with the cost of treating uninsured patients in hospital emergency rooms. States that accept the money may be on the hook if Washington later decides to reduce the generous federal matching funds for the expansion.

"What this really means is the decisions are going to be made after the elections this year," said Wisconsin's health secretary, Dennis G. Smith, whose state has not moved to put the law in place. "This is going to go back to Congress. We had always thought (the law) was unworkable, and today's ruling proves the point even more."

Aside from help for low-income and uninsured people, the Supreme Court decision also means an expanded safety net for all Americans. Starting in 2014, insurance companies will not be able to deny coverage for medical reasons, nor can they charge more to people with health problems. Those protections, now standard in most big-employer plans, will be available to all, including people who get laid off, or leave a corporate job to launch their own small business.

Seniors stand to receive better Medicare coverage for those with high prescription costs, and no copayments for preventive care. But hospitals, nursing homes, and many other service providers may struggle once the Medicare cuts used to finance the law really start to bite.

The health insurance industry's top lobbyist said the ruling relieved one big concern for insurers ? that the mandate would be struck down, allowing people to buy coverage literally on the way to the hospital. But the companies are still worried about costs.

"Without universal participation you have no incentive to purchase coverage until you are sick, and that is not an insurance system," said Karen Ignagni, president of America's Health Insurance Plans. "Now it's time to turn all the attention toward affordability." The industry continues to fight taxes and other requirements in the law.

In contrast to the states, the nation's vast health care industry is better prepared. When the law passed in 2010, insurers, hospitals and major employers immediately went to work to carry it out. Some of the changes called for in the law were already being demanded by employers trying to get better value for their health insurance dollars.

"The factors driving health care reform are not new, and they are not going to go away," said Dr. Toby Cosgrove, CEO of the Cleveland Clinic. "We know we have to take costs out of the system and improve quality."

App Player lets you run Android apps on your Mac

Covering hacks where Android and Apple merge into one is always interesting, mainly because they appear to be such an unlikely duo. Although it seems that the theory of opposites attracting holds true, as one company has Android apps and OS X working in perfect harmony.

BlueStacks? Android App Player software lets you access thousands of apps in the Google Play store, and install them on your Mac. The software?which is currently free of charge when you sign up as a tester on the BlueStacks website?launched just outside the Google I/O event on June 27, and bizarrely featured an actual wedding tent to mark the beginning of a beautiful pairing between Google?s mobile apps and Apple?s OS.

At present, the one downside is that there are only 17 apps available to download for your computer, mainly from BlueStacks? developer partners. However, the company adds that it will be inviting more Android developers and their software to the application monthly, with the hope of producing more tablet-friendly, high resolution apps.

The player for Mac is currently a public alpha, and like anything new there could be a few kinks in need of ironing out. The team is keen to get feedback though, so if you do sign up be sure to share any errors you encounter.

Windows users, don?t worry, you?re not being left out: Android App Player is already available for you too.

While this new software could come in useful for testing out apps not available on either the Mac App Store or iTunes App store, I can?t help but see the likes of Angry Birds in full screen being somewhat distracting?

Head over to the BlueStacks website to download Android App Player for free and help setting up. Which Android apps would you consider downloading on your Mac or Windows PC?
