In Saudi Arabia, a quiet tide of reform

Declining the revolutionary model that Egypt established in overthrowing Mubarak, Saudi reformers are working for a shift in mind-sets as well as policies ? and making headway.

Riyadh and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

When Mohammad al-Qahtani moved back to his native Saudi Arabia after a decade in the United States, his 3-year-old daughter, Norah, was not pleased. "Daddy, let's go home," she said at the time. "This is not a nice place."

As one of the kingdom's most outspoken human rights activists, Mr. Qahtani can sympathize. But he has refused to flee.

During an intense two months of interrogations this spring, the Ministry of the Interior tried to intimidate him, on one occasion bringing a stack of printouts of his text messages. When the intimidation didn't work, the ministry tried to buy him off with a position in Washington, he says. He refused them, just as he had his daughter, who is now 13 and ? like her mother and three siblings ? supports his campaign for establishing a stronger rule of law.

"I take it as a moral responsibility," says Qahtani, who says he has received "credible" tips that he will soon lose his job as an economics professor at the state-run Institute of Diplomatic Studies. "It's a very difficult time?. But believe me, we can weather it.

"Maybe in 10, 20 years we can look in the eyes of our kids and say, look, we tried," he adds.

Though Saudi Arabia barely stirred when the Arab Spring erupted last year, it would be a mistake to interpret that silence as satisfaction with the status quo.

Qahtani is one of a small but growing number of Saudi reformers who are patiently working for change within the boundaries of the deeply conservative Saudi society ? and making surprising progress. While few support the revolutionary model of Tunisia or Egypt, they are benefiting from an Arab Spring tail wind.

"The revolution that took place around us was a wake-up call," says Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, speaking recently to a US media delegation in his plush 66th-floor offices in Riyadh's Kingdom Tower. "No one will say it, but it was the catalyst."

Among the signs of reform:

?A new YouTube satire show, La Yekthar ("Put a lid on it"), is pushing the boundaries of free speech; the most popular program so far, which mocks the government's anticorruption commission, received 3.3 million views.

?Police stations, which once turned away battered women with an admonition to obey their husbands, now have special units to tackle domestic violence; the campaign has been led by pediatrician Maha Almuneef (see her quote at lower right).

?Next year, women like Dr. Almuneef will become voting members of the Shura Council, which often summons top officials for questioning and fiercely debates proposed laws.

?Sheikh Salman al-Ouda, a Salafi sheikh long popular among hard-liners, including Osama bin Laden, is now preaching the compatibility of democracy and Islam and getting serious traction (see his quote at right).

?Some 150,000 Saudi students are currently studying abroad on the King Abdullah scholarship, cultivating a generation fluent in English and at ease with Western society.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney says he's honored and humbled to become the Republican Party's 2012 presidential nominee.

And he's expressing confidence in his chances of winning the White House this fall.

The former Massachusetts governor clinched the party nod Tuesday night with a Texas primary victory.

In a post-victory statement, he claims the party has come together after a divisive primary with one goal. He says that's putting what he calls the country's failures of the last three-plus years in the past. He also says he's mindful of the challenges that lie ahead. But he also says he and the country will settle for nothing less than making America prosperous and filled with jobs.

ConsumerWatch - CBS San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ? Replacing a windshield seems easy enough. But, according to the Bureau of Automotive Repair there?s been an uptick on windshield companies operating without a license.

Bay Area resident Clifford Quan learned about unlicensed windshield repair companies the hard way. According to Quan after hiring a company by the name ?Elite Vision Auto Glass? his dash board was destroyed. ?I noticed the damage in the dash and it consisted of gauges and holes,? he said.

Quan claims the technician left without giving him a receipt, but when he called to complain about the damage and asked for an invoice he got more than he bargained for. In addition to an invoice from ?Elite Vision Auto Glass? he got an identical invoice from a company called ?Executive Auto Glass.? The company ?Elite Vision Auto Glass? refused to pay for Quan?s repairs and went out of business in January.

As for ?Executive Auto Glass,? the company is still operating but it is not licensed with the Bureau of Automotive Repair. ?You should never do business with an unlicensed auto repair of any kind,? said Russ Heimerich of the Bureau of Automotive Repair. He also adds windshield companies without a proper license can be prosecuted for fraud.

Our ConsumerWatch producer went undercover to see if ?Executive Auto Glass? would replace our windshield without a license. Turns out the company sent a different company to perform the work. The company told CBS 5 they were subcontracted by ?Executive Auto Glass.? The company also told our ConsumerWatch producer they had a proper license to replace the windshield. But, when CBS5 verified with the Bureau of Automotive repair, we found they were unlicensed.

According to Heimerich consumers have little recourse if they hire a company not licensed with the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Clifford Quan said he now wishes he would?ve done his homework. ?I?m sure there are many reputable companies out there that do fine jobs,? he said. ?You just need to do more research.? Consumers can check if a windshield company is licensed by going to the Bureau of Automotive Repairs? Website and typing in the business name or Automotive Repair Dealer license.

The company ?Executive Auto Glass? refused to provide a comment suitable for air. The Bureau of Automotive Repair has opened an investigation against ?Executive Auto Glass.?

First video of Lufthansa's new business class - One Mile at a Time

Back in March Lufthansa formally unveiled the details of their new business class product, which was long overdue. While it was supposed to premier on the 748 that Lufthansa is in the process of taking delivery of, they?ve already outfitted one of their Airbus 330s with the new business class product. While it?s by no means a comprehensive trip report, here?s the first video I?ve seen of the new business class seats in action:

The seats seem loud, though it actually looks quite a bit better than I had expected?

Bud weakens to tropical storm after prompting emergency preparations on Mexico's Pacific coast

Bud weakened to a tropical storm Friday as heavy rain began to pelt a string of laid-back beach resorts and small mountain villages on Mexico's Pacific coast south of Puerto Vallarta.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, said that maximum sustained winds that were once blowing at 115 mph (185 kph) had slowed to 60 mph (95 kph) by Friday night. The government of Mexico changed the hurricane warning for the coast of Mexico from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes to a tropical storm warning. Hurricane watches were also discontinued.

Forecasters said the storm would continue to weaken and the center would move over land late Friday or Saturday.

Heavy rain started Friday night in Puerto Vallarta and rainfall was expected to accumulate from 6 to 10 inches in many spots. Mexican authorities canceled school in 11 communities expected to be hit by heavy rains in Jalisco state. Emergency workers prepared emergency shelters, many of them in empty school classrooms.

The state was placed on high Friday night as the storm center neared land, and emergency officials in Puerto Vallarta said they were closely monitoring villages that had been hit by flooding and mudslides in previous hurricanes and tropical storms.

Rains and 6-foot (2-meter) high waves pelted Melaque, a beach town on the Bahia de Navidad, about 60 mph (100 kilometers) east of the sparsely populated stretch of coast where the storm's center was expected to come ashore during the night.

Category 2 Hurricane Jova hit the area in October, killing six people and flooding parts of Melaque and neighboring Barra de Navidad.

"There was a lot of flooding in the whole area, and we lost electricity," recalled Rafael Galvez, manager of the Hotel Bahia in Melaque. But this week, he said, only seven of his hotel's 26 rooms were occupied, and none of the hotel's guests were planning to leave.

The hurricane center said the storm would hit land, move a little inland and then make a U-turn and head back out into the Pacific. Rain, rather than wind, could be the big threat, with the center warning of the "potential for life-threatening mudslides" in steep terrain inland.

The government of Jalisco state prepared hundreds of cots and dozens of heavy vehicles such as bulldozers that could be needed to move debris.

Officials in Puerto Vallarta said they were in close contact with managers of the hundreds of hotels in the city in case tourists need to move to eight emergency shelters, but on Friday night they said that appeared unlikely. It said the sea along the city's famous beachfront was calm, but swimming had been temporarily banned as a precaution.

A separate storm was pounding much of Cuba and the Bahamas on Friday. Cuba's civil defense agency reported that a French citizen, Alain Manaud, and Silvestre Fortun Alvarez of Cuba were missing after trying to cross rain-swollen rivers, according to the government's Prensa Latina news agency. It said a search for them was continuing.

An official at the French Embassy in Havana said Manaud was 66 and had lived in Cuba for several years. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment publicly.

The agency quoted government meteorologists as saying more than 20 inches (500 millimeters) of rain had fallen on parts of the central province of Sancti Spiritus.

The hurricane center reported that the system had about a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical or subtropical cyclone.

Greek pro-bailout conservatives regain lead: polls

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's conservatives have regained an opinion poll lead that would allow the formation of a pro-bailout government committed to keeping the country in the euro zone, a batch of new surveys showed on Saturday.

Greece was forced to call repeat elections for June 17 after a May 6 vote left parliament divided evenly between groups of parties that support and oppose the austerity conditions attached to a 130 billion euro bailout agreed with the European Union and International Monetary Fund in March.

Polls up to Saturday had showed pro- and anti-bailout parties running neck-and-neck ahead of the vote which could determine the country's future in the single currency.

Five polls published in the weekend press showed the conservative New Democracy party, which supports the bailout, with a lead of between 0.5 and 5.7 points over the anti-bailout leftist SYRIZA party - though analysts said the race was still too close to call.

SYRIZA has said it would ditch the country's bailout deal that has led to record unemployment and severe wage cuts.

But Germany and other lenders have said they would cut the country's funding if it took such a step. That would lead to bankruptcy and possibly force Greece to leave the euro.

New Democracy would get between 25.6 percent and 27.7 percent of the vote if the election was held today, according to the polls by Eleftheros Typos/Pulse, Proto Thema/Alco, Real News/MRB, To Vima/Kapa and Ethnos/MARC. SYRIZA's support was between 20.1 and 26 percent.

According to the Pulse and MARC polls, New Democracy and the next-biggest pro-bailout party, the socialist PASOK, would together win a parliamentary majority of between 11 and 16 seats in the country's 300-seat parliament.

"NO BAILOUT, NO FUEL"

The new figures were released after conservative leader Antonis Samaras launched an attack on SYRIZA, accusing his rival of flirting with disaster by promising voters Greece could ditch the bailout without risking an exit from the euro.

"If Greece unilaterally rejects the bailout deal it will be isolated for years ... It will have no food, no drugs, no fuel. It will have to live with permanent power cuts," Samaras told party faithful in a rally.

Responding to Samaras, SYRIZA reiterated its opposition to the bailout. "It (the bailout) would mean new wage and pension cuts, new public sector firings, soaring unemployment and shuttered shops," the party said in a statement.

SYRIZA says it wants Greece to keep the euro but drop the austerity policies associated with the country's bailout - a position shared by most Greeks according to one of the polls.

Sixty-five percent of respondents in the Ethnos/MARC survey said that the country should "negotiate hard" to revise the bailout's terms, while 54 percent believed that there was no way Athens could leave the euro. A total of 82 percent said the country should keep the single currency.

A string of international officials kept up the pressure on Athens on Saturday to stick to the terms of the bailout, saying patience was running out.

"We're not willing to pour money into a bottomless pit," German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich told newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung.

IMF chief Christine Lagarde said Greeks had to take responsibility for their fate, adding that deprived children in Africa needed more help than people in Greece.

"I think they (the Greeks) should help themselves collectively ... by all paying their tax," she was quoted as saying in an interview with Britain's Guardian newspaper.

Lagarde's statements provoked dozens of critical comments by Greeks on her Facebook page. "Have you ever considered that we've simply ran out of cash?" one wrote.

The IMF chief responded on Facebook: "As I have said many times before, I am very sympathetic to the Greek people and the challenges they are facing ... An important part of this effort is that everyone should carry their fair share of the burden."

FRAGILE LEAD

Analysts said New Democracy's lead was precarious. "These polls show that people got scared from SYRIZA's lead in previous surveys," said political analyst John Loulis.

"This is still a very tight race. New Democracy has a small advantage but whoever called them favorites would be dead wrong," he added.

SYRIZA, led by its charismatic 37-year old leader Alexis Tsipras, is doing particularly well among the young who are particularly hit by unemployment, pollster Pulse said.

New Democracy, by contrast, had a big lead among the over-60s, Pulse said.

In a bid to woo anti-bailout voters, conservative leader Samaras said on Saturday Greece should be given more time to comply with a bailout term to generate about 11.5 billion euros in savings over the next two years.

"All new spending cuts ... should take place over four years, not two," he was quoted as saying by Real News.

Greece's bailout deal allows for a possible relaxation of the country's bailout targets if its recession worsens.

Greece's new government will have to act fast. Without new bailout funds, Athens may run out of cash by end of June, newspaper To Vima reported, citing a memo compiled by former Prime Minister Lucas Papademos on May 11.

"From June 20, the government's available cash will cross negative territory to the tune of 1 billion euros," the document said, confirming earlier reports by finance ministry officials that Greece might run out cash by the end of June.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4023

From a casual glance at its features, or even the results on our tests, the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4023 ($299.99 list) doesn't seem all that different from the much less expensive Editors' Choice Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4020 ($149.99 direct, 4.5 stars). Both are aimed at micro and small office, both offer WiFi and Ethernet, both have similar speed and output quality, and at the base price for each, both offer essentially the same paper handling. But although the differences are relatively subtle, they're enough to justify the higher price for those who need them.

If you think of the WP-4023 as a beefed up version of the Epson WP-4020, you won't be far off. For paper handling, for example, both include a duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page), a 250-sheet tray, and an 80-sheet tray, for a total 330-sheet input capacity. However, only the WP-4023 lets you add an optional 250 sheet tray for a total of 830 sheets.

Similarly, both can use the same ink cartridges. But only the WP-4023 can also use higher capacity cartridges, with a higher yield per cartridge?at 3,400 pages each, rather than 2,400 for black and 1200 for each color?and a slightly lower cost per page.

The potential savings per page isn't much. The difference is for color pages only, and it's just 0.4 cents per page, so you'd have to print 37,500 color pages to make up the difference in initial cost between the two printers. The real advantage of the higher capacity cartridges in this case is the convenience of not having to change cartridges as often. However, that convenience, along with the potentially higher input capacity, makes the WP-4023 a better choice for heavier duty printing.

The Basics, Setup, and Speed
Like most of Epson's WorkForce printers the WP-4023 offers support for Epson Connect Email Print and Google Cloud Print for printing through the cloud, as well as support for Apple AirPrint for printing over a WiFi connection. As with other WorkForce printers also, the WP-4023 doesn?t come with setup instructions for Google Cloud Print or AirPrint, so you have to find them on Epson's Web site.

The WP-4023 is large for an inkjet, at 11.2 by 18.1 by 16.5 inches (HWD), but assuming you have room for it, set up I standard fare. For my tests, I connected it to a wired network and printed from a Windows Vista system.

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4023

The printer's speed counts as a strong point. I timed the WP-4023 on our business applications suite at an effective 6 pages per minute (ppm). That makes it essentially tied with both the Epson WP-4020 and the Editors' Choice HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter ($149.99 direct, 4.5 stars), with all three printers well into laser territory for speed. They're also much faster than the vast majority of inkjets at anything like the price. The speed for photos wasn't as impressive, but still counts as reasonably fast, averaging 1 minute 12 seconds for a 4-by-6.

Output Quality
Output quality for the WP-4033 is typical for an inkjet overall, with slightly lower quality text than most, but slightly higher quality photos. Text quality is at the low end of the tight range where the vast majority of inkjets fall, which makes it good enough for most business purposes, unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

Graphics is dead on par for an inkjet, making it suitable for any business need, including PowerPoint handouts, for example. Depending on how much of a perfectionist you are, you may also consider it good enough for output going to an important client or customer when you need to convey a sense of professionalism.

Photo quality is at the upper end of the tight range were virtually all inkjets fall. By definition, that makes it better than you'd get with some drugstore prints and far better than you'll get from a color laser. This counts as overkill for most offices, but it can be a useful extra for real estate offices and other businesses, that need to print photos.

If your print needs aren't heavy duty enough to make you long for the convenience of the WP-4023's high-capacity cartridges, its optional paper tray, or both, count the printer as an unnecessary luxury. You'll be better off spending half as much on the Epson WP-4020 or the HP Officejet Pro 8100. On the other hand, if you print enough so those features sound more like necessities you can't do without, the Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4023 is clearly the better choice. More important, its balance of speed, output quality, paper handling, and support for features like Email Print and AirPrint make it easy to recommend.

Google Page Rank Drop Down

Hi Dear Members,

My website had a google PR of 2 but they dropped it to 1 all of a sudden. Does anyone know why these things happen? All the links are dofollow and I've used CommentLUV in Comments.

Read somewhere that it might be temporary. But how do we make sure that it will go back the 2?

My site experienced something similar. I did create two new pages and linked them from the home page. Can that have an effect on page rank?

Well, I create and publish a new post on my blog 2 to 3 times a week. I don't think creating a new page and link it back to the home page would solve the issue.

Any new idea?

Google Page Rank Drop Down

Page rank by Google now a day very difficult because of their new algorithms as we called Panda. So before doing any thing unusual on your site just go through once the new policy of google. This will help you a lot.

Content has nothing to do with PR, the only way to gain PR is to build links.

Basically, PR is passed on from other sites so if you are aiming to gain more PR you need to build links from pages (thats the page not the site) that has a high PR and low link count in order to have a good amount of PR passed down to your link.

You can go into more details on the subject by searching for things like "pagerank flow" and "passing on link juice" etc.

But if you want to rank higher on google to gain more traffic and ultimately make more sales, you should be worrying about getting quality links to rank, and not be worrying so much about the toolbar pagerank as that not going to get you at the top of google.

Good sharing about PR. Now i am going to see the new rules of google.

Google has a fast changing ung algorithm so we have to look for what are the do's and dont's, we need to maintain build more quality links, and fresh and unique content for our site is a big factor too.

It appears, however, that Google?s own PageRank has gone down from a 10 to a 9. Make of this what you will, but it is quite interesting that the controller of all PageRank would devalue its own.

Google regularly check it and if you have not good quality backlink, your site PR decreases.

Google changes the algorithm frequently. You have to read their new algorithm, specially the Panda Update. Now the Google Page depends upon quality contents and natural backlinks after the release of Google Panda.

Williams edged second-place finisher Jaylen Rodger by just .14 seconds, becoming just the second UMD woman to ever win an individual NCAA national title.

Islamist and ex-PM vie for mantle of Egypt's revolt

CAIRO (Reuters) - The Muslim Brotherhood and a military man identified with the police state of the ousted Hosni Mubarak courted defeated first-round candidates in Egypt's presidential election on Saturday, each trying to claim the mantle of the revolution for a runoff next month.

State media named the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi and former air force chief Ahmed Shafiq as the top two vote-getters in this week's first round of a close-fought election made possible by last year's popular revolt.

Official results are not due until Tuesday to allow the election committee to hear complaints and appeals about the voting. State newspapers cited no source for their vote count, which broadly tallied with previous Brotherhood estimates.

The choice between Mursi and Shafiq, representing forces that have tussled for the past six decades, has dismayed many Egyptians who voted for candidates offering a middle ground.

They fear a victory for the 70-year-old Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, would snuff out hopes of change ignited by the anti-Mubarak uprising, while a win for Mursi would pitch Egypt into an experiment with Islamic rule.

The Brotherhood invited rivals, including losing candidates such as leftist Hamdeen Sabahy and moderate Islamist Abdel Moneim Abol Fotouh, to talks on Saturday aimed at gaining their support for the runoff against Shafiq on June 16 and 17.

Warning of "determined efforts to recreate the old regime", it said parties that supported the uprising against Mubarak must unite "so that the revolution is not stolen from us".

The Brotherhood already holds the biggest bloc in parliament after an election completed in January, but has been unable to assert itself against an army-appointed interim government.

WHO STOLE THE REVOLUTION?

Shafiq used strikingly similar language at a news conference as he addressed youth groups that spearheaded last year's popular uprising.

"Your revolution was stolen," he told them. "I pledge to return its fruits to your hands."

Shafiq said that "the clock cannot be turned back", but that he would not let the country "drown in chaos".

Much of his rhetoric indirectly targeted the Brotherhood, playing on fears among Egypt's minority Christians and secular liberals that a Mursi presidency would threaten their freedoms.

"No exclusion of anyone or distancing of anyone," he declared. "Everyone has a right to be a part of this nation."

On Friday he had told Egyptian television that he saw no problem with the idea of a Muslim Brotherhood-led government if he were elected president.

The generals who took over when Mubarak quit on February 11, 2011, have promised to make way for a new president by July 1, formally ending a messy and often bloody political transition.

But the military, which has supplied all Egypt's previous presidents, is keen to keep its privileges and influence in a new order in which the powers of the president, parliament and government are as yet undefined by a rewritten constitution.

Mursi and Shafiq only narrowly topped the vote on Wednesday and Thursday, in which unofficial results showed less than 8 percentage points separating the top four candidates.

Mursi's 25 percent paled in comparison to the parliamentary election, in which the Brotherhood gained nearly half the seats.

Reform-minded independents such as Abol Fotouh and Sabahy between them won more votes than either Shafiq or Mursi, hinting at the growth of a new centre in Egypt's fluid political scene.

"The Brotherhood will have to reach out in a grand and dramatic way to the centre and the other political parties if they have any hope of winning their support and any hope of winning the presidency," said Elijah Zarwan of the European Council on Foreign Relations think tank.

ANTI-SHAFIQ FRONT?

A Brotherhood party official, Yasser Ali, said the talks to persuade rivals to join an anti-Shafiq front would discuss the vice presidency and a new coalition government.

"We know we will succeed in uniting behind the initiative to save the nation and complete the revolution," Essam el-Erian, deputy head of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, told a news conference on Friday.

Long a thorn in Mubarak's flesh, the Brotherhood has looked increasingly isolated from other parties since his fall, first facing accusations it was slow to join the revolt and then that it acquiesced in the military rule that followed.

Trust in the Brotherhood was further undermined when the group decided to join the presidential race, after previously pledging to stay out. The group, founded in 1928, says it is the target of a vicious smear campaign by its opponents.

Abol Fotouh, who won about 17.6 percent of the vote by the Brotherhood's count, has said he will now back the Islamist group with which he split last year to run for president.

He did not name the Brotherhood, but said he and his supporters would "rise above our political and party differences" and would "stand in a united front against the symbols of corruption and oppression".

Shafiq has won support among Egyptians who see him as the kind of strongman the country needs to end 15 months of political instability, economic failure and rising crime.

His constituency also includes Christians, who form about a 10th of Egypt's 82 million people. They complained of discrimination in Mubarak's day, but are likely to vote for Shafiq in preference to an Islamist.

Mohamed Habib, a former deputy leader of the Brotherhood who left the group last year in protest at its post-uprising policies, said the group should offer vice presidential positions to at least two people from outside the group.

He suggested one could be a Christian - an idea to which Mursi himself has said he is not opposed.
